For more than 10 years now I think the fashion and true casual clothes that looked good on men (inc young men) have gone right out of the window.

Up until around 2003 I could always buy very fashionable/casual shirts and t shirts, jeans and trousers of all kinds that looked really good and I was often complimented about my choice of clothes, but then from around 2004 the fashion just seemed to go and imo its been right dumbed down, no fashion style in men's clothes really ever since.

I also remember this was roughly the time Shane Richie first appeared in Eastenders with his imo naff loud flower power type shirts and most of the high street shops suddenly started to stock shirts like his as the main "fashion"! I think that could have been the beginning of the naffness in men's clothes but even if it wasn't, who else agrees with me that men's clothes these days are pretty naff and have been for ages now?

Depends really, i like the classic plain lacoste polo..

They havent changed for about 40 years, also have a few long sleeve versions that look really smart with jeans and nice shoes.

Best colours are black or blue..

I wouldnt be seen dead in a Shane Richie shirt.

Also The North Face and Jack Wolfskin make nice Tees and jackets..

And they fit and wash well before anybody complains they are expensive..so they are worth it.

Don't agree with the OP. There is plenty choice out there, it just takes a little bit of thought to find the fit and style that works best for you. And the suggestion that Shane Richie is somehow indirectly responsible for the decline in men's fashion standards is farcical.

I used to love D&G in the 90s, jesus wept I wouldn't wear it now..

If I'm going out its normally a polo,a dark Boss or Lacoste and jeans..

Nice and simple, less is more...

Up until 2003 I was buying very casual smart looking shirts from the likes of Next, Burtons and Top Man and people often said that I looked good and the clothes were really good, but since then, those 3 shops and imo River Island too have just dumbed down far too much in the clothes they stock,

I think they really need to go back and look at what they stocked up until 2003 and compre them from what they've been selling since and see what were the better sellers and see what people think looks better too. The clothes I was buying then would still look good now if they were available to buy.

The only shops that sometimes get close to what I'm after now are debenhams and M+S, Next occasionally in the shirts but they seem to only stock slim fit shirts where Regular is what I need and most shop's websites often don't list what fit a shirt is either (re slim, regular or others, only general chest/collar sizes are listed). Its a right pain trying to find good clothes to buy these days.

Don't you remember how the characher of Alfie Moon was so popular when he first appeared in Eastenders even though it was such a Del Boy rip off? It was soon after he first appeared in EE all the main high streets started selling shirts just like his with no other choices really and loads of young men bought them and imo they looked so naff and so wasted their money.

Plenty of choice out there but you need to know where to look.

My fella can't stand high street stuff, he shops from Pretty Green, Ben Sherman etc. He avoids the mall in Brighton and heads for the North Laines where all the independent men's shops are.

Brighton is great for shops like that, as is London, Soho etc.. Not saying that is your particular clothes taste as well, but just saying there is plenty of choice out there if you expand your horizons from the obvious shops.

I find mens fashions awful these days. At least in more rural areas, you will find most men wearing similar outfits in pubs/bars and any ads you see on TV or in magazines for mens fashions look to weird. Like they're trying to say "look, it's skinny fit and weird and slightly androgynous so it's good". It's like we're living the 80's with a dash of Gaga "fashion" mixed in... and I hate it.

BIB: ... but the mystery is where they all buy this samey samey uniform 'rural' large check shirts, cords / slacks, tweed waistcoats etc... always in combinations of drab & bark with a Barbour on top and a cap. I've always assumed it must be the equestrian (saddlery) outfitters.

Have a look on their website or if there is a Ben Sherman shop near you, you will find a much larger range than at Debs.

I think the t-shirts/ shirts in most shops are shit, now I'll buy from one of those custom online t-shirt shops that let you put your own design on there. Most of my band t-shirts came from custom online places, since they're usually better than the official band ones.

I think if you pair even a cheap t-shirt like that with a decent leather jacket and smarter pair of trainers or boots, it looks good. Even a crap old pair of jeans and t-shirt can look good if you spend the money on the jacket and trainers instead of worrying about getting some fashion shirt that a million other people are wearing anyway.

I have sort of slightly changed in the fact that I now wear a hoodie. I have always dressed is the sort of geeky hacker style from the 80's to the Mr Robot hoodie hacker style. I just don't see the Douche lumberjack vaping hipster as very meaningful to me. The rest is too expensive if I wanted to go down another route.

2004 was 12 years ago, and you were 12 years younger.
Not surprising that compliments dry up as one ages.

I'm mid-30s now and have been wearing a lot of John Rocha from Debenhams.
It's quintessential smart-casual and I like it.

You can buy any kind of clothes if you go to the right shops. I've never really understood "fashions", why does everyone want to look the same? You walk around town on a Saturday night and 90% of the blokes look the same. I've a mate who blindly follows fashions and trends and one day he'll say for example "Baggy jeans are awful, there's no chance I'd wear them" and then a couple of weeks later some random celebrity will be seen wearing baggy jeans and my mate will buy some. I find it laughable.

I get most of my stuff online from Atom Retro. I love 60s style stuff and mod-type items. I've been dressing like that for years, that's the style I like so that's what I wear. I couldn't give a toss if it's "fashionable" and more times than not I generally get complimented on how I dress.

I love Troye Sivan's style.

Also, no I don't think there's any particular problem with fashion these days.
