So a new flaw in Android phones with Qualcomm processors was found, called Quadrooter. I'm just wondering if people have gotten patches to the fix the bug yet? Is it necessary to do so too?

Doubt if my Moto G will ever get a patch for CVE-2016-2503, CVE-2016-2504, CVE-2016-2059, CVE-2016-5340. The last security patch was last year.

The flaws were found in software that handles graphics and in code that controls communication between different processes running inside a phone.

Affected devices included:
■ BlackBerry Priv
■ Blackphone 1 and Blackphone 2
■ Google Nexus 5X, Nexus 6 and Nexus 6P
■ HTC One, HTC M9 and HTC 10
■ LG G4, LG G5, and LG V10
■ New Moto X by Motorola
■ OnePlus One, OnePlus 2 and OnePlus 3
■ US versions of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Samsung S7 Edge
■ Sony Xperia Z Ultra

The app in the google play store, isn't exactly a fix though, it's only a scanner. Of course once you've scanned it, it gives you links to an open source patch, however us normal people who don't know too much about android coding, aren't able to apply such a patch without the technical know how, unless I'm missing something?

If you download software not from the Google Play Store, you should know the risks. End of.

Those devices will have run on Android 5 or android 6 OS to begin with.

There possibly be many other older devices that will also be affected if they have been able to be upgraded to the android 5 or android 6 OS.

And there we all thought that all the most recent devices with Android 5 or 6 would not be suffering from vulnerabilities to hacking that older devices with pre android 5 OS were prone to.

I'm really not concerned about issues like this. Nor would I be for iOS.

But it makes money for a firm selling white papers and doing consultancy. The BBC gave them a nice ad, and of course it gives fanboys ammunition to use against others.

Just don't install suspect APKs and you'll be fine.
