I'm looking at GiffGaff's "Always On" sim-only plan which is essentially unlimited everything for £20 quid a month - does anyone know if they're any good ?

I've got Virgin's "unlimited" everything sim-only at the moment, but there's a window of opportunity to get out of it because i'd like to ideally get a plan that has 4G data available as I doubt Virgin will ever get it.

Was on GG for a few years, and Data was quite slow, all the time. Not sure if anything has changed since then, pretty sure it's still slow .

It's not unlimited everything, its 6GB data and then throttled to EDGE speeds.

Quote:
“With Always On* you get 6GB of UK data usage per month at full 4G speed. Once you've used up your 6GB data allowance you will experience a reduced data speed of 256kbps from 8 am to midnight. From midnight to 7.59 am you’ll have an unlimited data allowance at full speed.”

Many people complain it isn't really usable a lot of the time after the 6GB.

That's a pain. I'd assume the 4G would have been fast I suppose.

There are a couple of vodafone sim-only deals that look quite interesting for my price range and they've got 4G as well. Although i'm one of the weird ones in that I also need unlimited minutes

Saying that though, Giffgaff will likely be my only option as i'll almost certainly fail any credit check.

Jason, i have Giffgaff sim £20 unlimited, as above first 6gb is ok then throttled during 8m-midnight(my speed during those times 25kbps) between midnight( after i aeroplane phone) speed gets upto 1mbps 4g(small scottish town). Im trailing three payg sim(watching olympic events thro bbc sport app) using their £25 add-on giving unlimited data 500mins 3000 txt, no credit checks on either of those traffis`s.

I tried a giffgaff SIM for a while and it was painfully slow compared to an O2 SIM. I think the priority is rock-bottom.

If your credit rating is really poor you might have nothing to lose in trying for a SIM only contract with one of the mainstream operators - I think the bar is pretty low for these at they're low risk, and you may be able to wangle it with a deposit...

That's interesting to know, thanks.

I've only ever had sim-only deals anyway as I have an unlocked iPhone 6s, so I'm hoping you're right in that that would be seen as low risk, especially since my upper limit for what i can spend is only £20 quid.

I've found a pretty amazing EE deal i want to go for, but their online store is down tonight which is a pain so i'll have to likely wait until the morning.

EE's online store has been down for bloody hours and i can't try and complete the deal which is hugely annoying. I rang in, but they said they can't add the code I have for the amazon voucher so I have to wait.

Knowing my luck, the voucher code will expire before the site is back up ..

My credit rating is quite frankly terrible, having defaulted on handset contracts with EE, Vodafone and O2 in the past ten years. (Yes, I need to manage my money better.)

But Three accepted me on a one month SIM Only contract three months ago. This was their 1 month £23 200mins/unlimited texts and data/30GB hotspot plan.

I was very surprised to say the least. I need to keep this contract in good order as Three are pretty much the only company who I can use now, unless I pay off the couple of quid I owe on my legacy contracts. But there's no way in god's earth I'm paying Vodafone back. What happened was entirely their fault. But I'll not get into that.

I'm going for their current sim-only offer of unlimited minutes and texts with 16gb of 4G data reduced to £19.99 a month for 12 months. You also get BT Sport free for 6 months and I had a code for a £90 Amazon Voucher as well.

It looks like everything has actually gone through, although I made a bit of a pigs ear of it by applying again this morning with a whole new order, mainly so I could do it through Quidco. It has, rather understandably, flagged up as needing verification as the two orders were placed in a short space of time.

They've assured me that the deal will be honoured even if it goes past the expiry date of next Tuesday, so hopefully it will be. I won't be happy until I have the SIM in my phone, to be fair, but it's looking ok at the moment

Balls. Can't change. Phoned Virgin and they've claimed my account doesn't fall under the terms of affected accounts so they're not willing to let me cancel unless I pay off the contract, which isn't going to be possible.

What have Three offered as an alternative to the One Plan? Unprompted hey offered me £20/month for 30 GB tethering unlimited minutes and unlimited texts on a 12 month contract so I didn't even need to haggle. There is no better deal available from any other network.

It's irrelevant whether you have 3G or 4G as long as the speed is sufficient. Three has coverage at least as good as any other network & always a minimum of 3G so never drops down to GPRS i.e. unusable speeds.

Exactly, and I earn a good wage I'm not going to waste my time haggling for £3 off. I'm perfectly happy with what they provide and therefore happy to pay the price, which I think is cheaper than most networks and is a really good fit for my usage.

I need up to 30GB of tethering as I work and stay away from home regularly and take the iPad pro with me which is my source of entertainment when I'm away. I also find no matter where I am 99% of the time I'm able to use Youtube, Twitch etc to stream if I want. I've had a busier than usual week having been in Gloucestershire, Essex, Berkshire and Derby at the weekend and Three works for exactly what I need it for.

I also like to stream Tune-in in the car too, which works amazingly well, it's just like having DAB but better as more choice and better quality, and it's now so good coverage wise that you so rarely see any buffering or audio drop out. I also like the fact I don't have to keep check of data use on the phone on apps etc

It is the ideal package for me and very cheap, you couldn't pay me to go to other networks like Voda / O2 which fall back to 2G more often, or EE with it's caps and having to keep track of data usage, let alone the extra cost.
