The current Coronation Street cast is so big that some characters like Emily have gone decades without a storyline, and others such as Kirk are likewise given nothing to do, in his case for over 15 years!

The issue now is that they keep introducing characters with no idea what to do with them.

ALL the soaps have too many characters. It's an obsession.

All the British ones at least. It could be argued that the Aussie ones have too few

Much too big, especially since every character must be awkwardly shoe-horned into living within the confines of the immediate Coronation Street 'complex'.

The ongoing justification is that the increased number of episodes warrants the increased size of the cast, but in reality all we are left with is a bunch of underdeveloped, one-dimensional 'things' who just wander around aimlessly with little direction or purpose.

Personally I'd like to see the cast cut down to around 50, with a core of around 25-30 who actually live on the street itself. The rest live away from the street.

Yes, it is too big, and Eileen's house in particular seems to have bizarre Tardis-like dimensions.

Yes far too big at 83, thats a stupid amount to have, the soaps in general i think should try and keep the numbers between 30-40 anything more and you will just have too much deadwood, which you won't know what to do with. And as the OP say's Emily hasn't had a proper storyline in decades, which is why to me, she is not a legacy character, as she has done nothing in decades, apart from climb tree's, see her husband's killer and forgive him, and also get hit over the head with a crow bar.

It is a large cast and definitely needs pruning but at the same time they do have to account for the extra episodes and holidays/maternity leaves etc.
I feel like there's a tier system in Corrie with some characters being on the forefront and others being more on the sidelines. I wonder if it's a case of the writers just finding it easier to come up with storylines for certain characters .I mean does anyone ever get excited over an Izzy, Fizz or Sinead heavy plotline???

I think corrie have a lot of characters that need axing as most aren't good enough to handle big storylines or the viewers don't care about them if they have a big story e.g fizz and Tyrone over Christmas. I think they could use the houses better to make room for new characters. They could move Anna and Faye in with Kevin and free up their flat. New family in the rovers and then steve, liz and Michelle in the small flat

It's too big when you think about it, the same characters (Leanne, Tracy, David, Sarah etc) get the huge storylines year after year, and the likes of Dev and Sean have done nothing for years other than romance plots etc or crap comedy storylines.

Maybe that could be to do with the actors limitations. I actually like Dev (unpopular opinion I know) but I do get second hand embarrassment when he is at the forefront of a bigger, more dramatic storyline. Some characters are just much better used in the background and some actors are definitely better and more charismatic than others in the cast.

True enough but she is an elderly lady now and it is right that the street has some representatives of the older generation living within its confines. They don't necessarily have to be swinging from the lampshades but just be seen around doing normal everyday tasks.

Yes, I do realise those characters I mentioned have great actor portraying them which is probably the driving force in them getting big storylines.

I don't mind background character but when they get given the same storylines for years it does get tiresome. I mean Dev for example his storylines have mainly revolved round his womanising ways for the past decade.

I think as people have said characters get introduced to bring new blood into the show and draw interest, but then the character is introduced and it is as though the producers forget they are there. Some long-standing characters do get storylines but they never amount to anything or serve a purpose, such as Sophie and Sean with their numerous relationships that always end up with a breakup, but the characters never learn, and always react the same when they are jilted. Leanne for example takes centre stage quite a lot, but I'm glad she does as Jane Danson is the best actress there.

The cast is going to get even bigger soon to accomodate that extra episode.

I think you need to have recurring characters and supporting characters like kirk.

Not everyone is the main star and continually in a story.
