It is a contraction of "Marina" and became popular because of the film. I think it is very pretty.

In the film, the character's actual name is Margaret.

The character in the film (and Winston Graham's novel) is originally called Margaret.

Her given name was "Rear Window", but I've no idea if she stereotyped herself to the determinism.

I love the name Marnie and I've always had a strange fascination with the film despite my intense dislike of Tippi Hedren in it.

I remember going to see Rear Window in a small cinema in San Diego, such a fantastic film. They don't make them like that any more.

Winston Graham ( Poldark et al) wrote a novel called Marnie. Maybe that is the inspiration.

It's a popular name in its own right, esp in the US. Nothing to do with Margaret.

More likely Marnie's parents saw the film adaptation than read the book.

Could be. I have read all Winston Graham's books but haven't seen the film. In fact until this thread I hadn't realised that the film was the film of the book. I know its sacrilege but I am not a great fan of Hitchcock.

Me too. It's an unusual film. I loved Diane Baker's style in it. She aged wonderfully. Saw her in an episode of Murder She Wrote in the late 80s and she looked great.

Connery was really annoyed that Hitchcock made him shave his eyebrows for that film and the fact that he did makes his face very odd in it. Connery had very, very bushy eyebrows normally.
