Tinned tomatoes: chopped or not?
Inkblot

I've read that you should buy tinned chopped tomatoes because the whole ones are canned before they are ripe in order to stop them breaking up. But recently chopped tomatoes have become something more like mashed tomatoes, just a dollop of tomatoey gunge instead of identifiable tomato pieces. Which do you prefer - and are any brands better?

It's years since I bought tinned tomatoes.......but in the olden days I used to buy chopped for putting in things like pasta sauces, curries etc

I also used to buy whole which were really nice warmed up and served on cheese on toast.......

I think the main brand I got was Napolina.......but I'd buy any that were there

Depends what I am using them for. If they are going in something, chopped. If I am using them for tinned toms in a fry up for example then plum.

I have never experienced chopped tomatoes like mashed tomatoes. They have always been chopped and identifiable. Maybe you should try a different brand? I sometimes buy value ones, sometimes napolina etc when on offer. Depends what I'm doing with them.

Always whole, I've never found them unripe. In fact stopped using chopped years ago as I found them to have too much "watery" juice.
I buy cirio or sainsbury/waitrose own

I can't fault Aldi's own, although I haven't bothered to buy anyone else's for years.

For curries etc I always buy chopped but I have no loyalty to brands just buy whatever is on special offer. For a very pasta quick sauce I also like to use Tesco Value pasata which is 30-something pence.

I hate raw tomatoes so I almost never buy them fresh.

Always whole tinned tomatoes - I find them to be better quality than chopped (for the brands I buy anyway). If I need to use them in a sauce I just squish with my hands, it's that simple.

I don't buy passata because the salt content is very high compared to tinned toms.

I use both, depending on what its for. Curries etc I use chopped to save the pain of chopping them. I always try to keep a tin of unchopped for my fry ups (grill ups more than fry ) as I am not a fan of fresh grilled.

I always use chopped tinned tomatoes rather than whole, and whatever brand is on cheap. The only thing I've found with the cheaper brands is that they tend to have the more of the end bits of tomato, where the stalk joins the fruit, so I try and pick those out during the cooking as they don't break down into a sauce as much.
