I remember the first time I ever stood up to anybody was when a new teacher started teaching us German, she herself was German, and she said I will call you all by your last name. I replied that that would be fine, but that I wouldn't answer if she did. I did explain that teachers didn't do that at our school and she was fine.

I'd never answer to anybody calling me just by my surname, unless it were my nickname.
