Biffy Clyro - Ellipsis -
What the heck happened to them?
They've always been getting slightly more poppy album after album but this one seems to be a parody of themselves. The oomph seems to have disappeared from most songs on the album, it's almost into easy-listening territory at points - which is not the Biffy Clyro that I remember from when I started listening to them. There's a few decent songs on this one, but nothing on the scale of Opposites or previous albums. I'm all for them making whatever music they want to make but I can't see myself having this on anywhere near as much as they're previous albums. Definitely not worth a two year wait. |

The album itself is a little bit disappointing, but "Animal Style" is the best song that released in absolutely ****ing ages.

Don't, Won't, Can't is another one that works, it's not their finest piece in the back catalogue but it sounds good. In the Name of the Wee Man seems to have been tagged on because they needed a harder song despite the fact the subject matter could have done with the slightly mellower take of the rest of the album. I'm probably being harsh on it because I'm comparing it to their previous work - it's a good album in it's own rioght - but it's a bit of a diversion from their normal music in a lot of it. As he quizzically asked at the beginning "Record this?" - they clearly knew some people would react this way to it and good on them for doing what they want but it's not going to be viewed as highly as Only Revolutions or Opposites which are the post-puzzle benchmarks in my opinion. |

I don't think it is massively different from the last two I think it's more obvious because it is shorter so there is less weird or experimental tracks
I think 'Howl' is a great single but they have changed a lot since 'Questions And Answrrs' and 'Ideal Height' It is amazingly the success they had they were a practically ignored by all the music press and media for first two albums and they just got bigger and bigger through grass roots a rare thing!! Also Zane Lowe played a huge part. They are still my favourite band of the 21st century!!! |
