Nokia Lumina 650 eating data

I've recently taken the plunge and signed up for a little 'Life Mobile' contract as opposed to PAYG.
Being new to it all, I've been checking my usage each day.
So far I've only used it once or twice when out & about (away from my wifi).
The funny thing is this.... My data is being used for no apparent reason!
I've looked at some help sites and lots of people seem to have this problem. Not just Nokias and not just Life Mobile.
There's lots of different advice. I've tried as many 'fixes' as I can but it's still happening.
I'm not talking about much data loss I don't think. Maybe 1mb a day. There are some horror stories about people losing their whole allowance!
But it's very puzzling. And VERY annoying. I'm not happy that somebody, anybody, can take data like this.
I'd like to set my phone so that only data that I use myself is used up.
Is there a simple fix?
And who should I contact if it doesn't stop?
I get the impression that the contract providers palm you off to the phone maker and vice versa.

What are you doing with your phone? For example, some people don't understand that WhatsApp uses data.

Have you tried fiddling with Data Sense?

Look at what applications you have running. Many have auto refresh or polling of websites. Facebook, Twitter, the BBC news app etc.

Also turn off the auto updates and auto checking for updates in Google Play.

Your email might be set to 'push' which means it's basically always checking for new mail.

You might need to go through all the apps you have on the phone looking for those that have some sort of option to update or refresh. Some will only do it over wifi but others will do it regardless.

The Lumia 650 is a Windows Phone.

Go into settings>Nerwork&Wireless>data usage to see which apps are using the most data.
Also you could check if "Use mobile data if there's no ... wifi ...." Is set to "Don't allow"

Unfortunately Windows mobile 10 (unlike 8) doesn't show the data/wifi usage spliat app level.

Yes they do using the Data Sense app.

Edit: Sorry, missed you meant on W10 rather than W8.1. I am a W10 Refusenik both on desktop and mobile.

Your phone is 'eating' through data yet you estimate it to be only 1MB a day?

Total non-issue.

The lowest tariff that Life offers 500MB a month. Losing 30MB a month through background email fetching, weather updates etc is hardly going to affect you much.
