You might be right about 'Touch' in January. I'm a bit surprised how long Clean Bandit have been at number 1, I was bored with the song some weeks ago.

I dont get all the love for Rockabye either. I heard it once and that was enough. I prefer Rather Be, which, btw, seems to be very popular on tv ads here in the US. I hear it a lot.
I expressed this over on the LM thread, but I am just now getting into the album (car speakers ) and I kind of really like Beep Beep for that 60s surfer/car culture/beach vibe. This album is funny because its as if their A&R Guy who I know spent several trips to LA this year suddenly fell in love with the 60s. |

On the other hand the Clean Bandit song being about single motherhood is quite appropriate for Christmas. I can see LM singing about such subjects in future.

Not a fan or anything, but I have to say the songs of this new album that have been singles aren't a patch on the (4?) singles of the previous album.
I'd say 'Black Magic' was as good a pure pop song your likely to here in the charts thesedays, and the follow-ups while not that quality were all quite likeable. The new songs are in comparison dire 'Shout out' is a horrid skreaky thing, 'Touch' is just bland and 'Oops' is just feeble. |

I wont argue about the studio version of Touch, but I put SOTMX right on up there. The other thing is like the best of their songs it elicits emotional reactions from the public, so that means its doing its job as a piece of Art.

Now, the acoustic version of Touch I feel completely different about. Its great! Leigh Anne is doing really well lately.

I'm glad Touch is looking set to do well. It stood out straight away when I first listened to the song. |

I'm having a hard time with the studio version of Touch. Its not engaging me emotionally at all, although I can acknowledge that its slick. I had the same reaction to DNA and Move.
My MOR radar is usually accurate. ![]() I think LMLY might have peaked higher if they hadnt had to cancel some of their high profile Dec. promo, from having 2 girls sick. |

For me, Touch is a great choice for single #2 off the album and the fact it's heading for the top 5 this Friday shows that this single has resonated with the fans. Also I still regard DNA and more especially Move as two of Little Mix's best singles. I personally prefer these tracks to Love Me Like You but that's just my opinion. |

My opinion probably has a lot to do with being formed in a different country, with different musical influences. For instance, I couldnt ever have imagined the Girls Aloud/Xenomania sound ever succeeding over here in the US, even though fans think they would have been big if they tried. I think the GA team knew it wouldnt fly so thats why they didnt try.
Having said that, I am not ever for an act feeling like they have to "be American" either. Historically thats where a lot of successful acts have brought themselves down from their heights, so I really dont want LM going down that route if they feel thats what it takes. I do appreciate that they have recorded some songs that may be more palatable to the US but I dont think they should compromise their own identity. Tangentially, I think LM's strongest USP besides their performing skills is selling their personalities. That strategy would free them from the "only as good as the last song" mentality and I think it builds brand loyalty to get an act through inevitable rough patches. The strategy worked really well with 1D in the US, so I dont see why it wouldnt help LM too. There's a new corporate team building idea over here that instead of focusing on strengthening your weaknesses, you fortify your strengths and let those make up for the weak parts. I think its so you dont get bogged down in a losing battle. Applying that to LM selling themselves, and I think their lack of radio play in the US wouldnt be such a factor. 1D only had 2 big radio songs in the US, What Makes You Beautiful and Story of My Life and it didnt hurt them. |

Little Mix have more credentials that many UK bands to make it in the US. They are good singers/musicians, perform well live, their songs are not particularly local nor are they that radically different from what populates the US charts.
You mention Girls Aloud whose music might not have translated well to the US but a lot of Sugababes and All Saints music would have been fine to US audiences. I just think now that LM should give it a go. In the end a lot depends on luck. |

I thought Human was going to be further ahead than Touch in sales so a 2k gap does make me wonder if Little Mix can take advantage of the post-Christmas songs slump and grab that second #1 single from Glory Days. It would be the first time Little Mix will have scored two UK #1 singles from an album, and it would be even more remarkable considering Touch is a post-album single release.
If only Little Mix had just one TV performance in early January, that could be all it takes to take the #1 spot as Rockabye's sales are only going to decrease week-on-week, except this coming week as it'll probably get a New Years Eve party boost. It's almost similar to the CD single days when Spice Girls debut album had already sold over 1 million copies, but when Mama/Who Do You Think You Are? was released in 1997, the CD single still sold bucketloads even though both songs were on an album that itself had already sold bucketloads. Ok, sales might not be on the same scale but it would be an achievement in the Spotify era. |

Thats almost a 3k gap coming from behind. My prediction last month was a #3 peak for Touch. We'll see how far off I'll be.
Touch had a Hot Songs placing last week, so lets see how it does without. Human is increasing on streaming so I think it will block Touch. I'm also suspicious that Ed is ready to drop something. |

On iTunes Clean Bandit are gaining on Rag'n'Bone Man so I really wouldn't be surprised to see Rockabye remain #1 for an eighth week. As for Ed Sheeran, if he drops his new single on a Friday, he could possibly challenge for #1 in its first week of release. Maybe they're gonna release the track next Friday (30th) in the hope of claiming the first new #1 of 2017. |

Spotify
2 Rockabye (feat. Sean Paul & Anne-Marie) by Clean Bandit 374,189 13 Touch by Little Mix 241,977 25 Human by Rag'n'Bone Man 196,689 1300 daily between CB and LM vs 450 between LM and Human and Human is outselling them too. On another thought, did the qualifying period for the Brits already pass? Last year it was extended to Dec. so they didnt miss Adele which makes me think Nov. is the cutoff. |

I'm unsure whether the iTunes gift card effect is as prominent as it used to be but with Top Of The Pops Xmas Special tomorrow, some tracks may get a boost over the week. Next Friday's chart is going to be a weird one because the Christmas songs are in their stride now so will get at least 3 maybe 4 days of high streaming figures, but then come 27th onwards I can't see these songs getting such high streaming figures so all the years biggest singles could end up getting big boosts towards the end of the week. Touch is holding up well on Spotify, it remains at #13 whilst Rag'n'Bone Man dips to #31. I reckon Touch will be top 10 on Spotify by the end of the week as the likes of Mariah, Wham, The Pogues, Shakin' Stevens, Michael Bublé and Andy Williams all start their annual post-Christmas plummet.

31 Human by Rag'n'Bone Man 194,499 Its only dipped by 2k streams so its still right in there. Its position got knocked down from holiday entries. Touch is static at 241,333. Touch is selling 70% of Human but CB is poised to reclaim the iTunes top spot. I think the Touch video release next Friday would be a good move. |

Its dangerous to only look at positions but not the actual streams.

Next Friday the video would be perfectly positioned to be on everyone's party playlist for NYE, and then in a typically slow post holiday period it could do well. I'm sticking to #3 though.

So then, off the back of actually enjoying Get Weird, I'm one of the surely many happy punters who retrieved GD from their festive sack. (My brother also*landed*a copy, even though he's not previously been a Mixer at all, largely due to "Santa" [nudges in mum's direction] not quite having figured out how Amazon works!)
And the verdict? "Nothing Else Matters" is cracking, the sort of tune that, if I didn't already know what it was, I'd have to hurriedly find out so as to add it to the collection, it's right up there with some of the edgy pop I've loved in prior years. "Your Love" is another early favourite. Bronze medal? Early days, but maybe "Private Show" just now... And the acoustic "Touch" is nice to have, I'm pleased to see something less 'produced' show off the ladies' vocal abilities a little more - though in fairness I am able tto remember back in the days of CD singles when acoustic/live performances would've been chucked on a B-side somewhere (Mansun, among others, did exactly that on occasion) Overall though, a fine pop LP: if you liked GW, get this on too. (I'll get the DVD a watch once the telly schedule's calmed down from its Christmas clutter...) |
