Katie and Ricky's weird, intermittent American "twangs"

Really starting to grate on me. Both Katie and Ricky seem to change their accents depending on who they are talking to. Like in tonight's show, Ricky was talking alone with James and was using what I assume is his "normal" accent. Previously, when talking to American housemates like Renee, he'll start using American words and have a "twang" to his voice.

Katie is even worse.

I appreciate she has lived in the USA for a couple of years, but there is no way someone after such a short time in another country would pick up an accent to the extent Katie has, tonight it went full on American. Other times she just has an English accent.

Fake asses, must be trippin'!

I noticed that tonight too with Katie.

I made this thread a week ago and got told to jog on because apparently no one else could hear it. Katie, in particular, has had an off/on American accent (no matter whom she is speaking to, Brit or American) since the beginning. And her English accent changes regions as well. Ricky's comes out more when he is speaking to Americans or pseudo American Katie.

To be fair I think Katie has lived and been living in America for almost a decade. Her accent wasn't full on American. There was an American twang when she was screaming at James. I likened it to how Kelly and Jack Osbourne used to speak on The Osbournes. An English accent but some words you can hear the American twang slip in

They sound like a couple of hillbillies just waiting for a banjo player to show up and Ricky to make heavy squeal like a pig

Christ it's not a choice !
Some people pick up accents easily some don't pretty simple really.
I was in a Birmingham hospital for only 2 weeks and I came out speaking like a brummy which I can assure you wasn't by choice !

Noticed it more with Katie as she'll speak once a day, usually before a balloon or something makes her cry, whereas Ricky struggles to do anything verbally. That shit is wack, yo.

Accents can be very easy to pick up. I have always got a bit of a twang of the local accent when I visit places.

I've no idea about Ricky but Katie's been living in America for years (even before X Factor)

Katie's husband is American and they live in America. Stands to reason she'd pick up an accent.

It's unusual for an adult in their 20s to pickup a foreign accent and use that accent when in your native country surround by a British majority.

But not impossible I shouldn't think.

I'm not sure what the suggestion is here, that she's randomly adding a fake accent to random words for..., what reason?

She's bee living variously around America (New York/LA/currently Atlanta) for the best part of a decade so I don't think it's that surprising she'd pick up a bit of a weird sound.

See also Nadine Coyle from Girls Aloud who has a bizarre American/Irish mix of an accent from living in the US.

I thought it was hilarious, hard to take the stupid emotionally fragile Bint when she's screaming at someone in a clearly fake accent.

Still not as embarassing or a creepy as Ricky's mama

Katie has had an Americain accent since she came into the house.
Ricky also has spent time in America but not as long as Katie .

Everyone picks up accents in different ways.I was brought up in London and lived in the Midlands for a while .I've lived in the south .

Here in the Midlands they think I speak more from London .In London they think I have a Midlands twang .
Nobody puts an accent on but sometimes when you're not thinking you're speech changes.
Evelyn in Civilian bb was brought up in Australia but I found her voice irritating the mix of posh London and Aussie.
Others liked it 😉

Maybe you need to get out of the country more love.

Hey, I'm American, and I don't hear them speaking like an American.

katie's probably changes a lot because she does radio. she's very used to having to control her accent so it probably happens by accident from time to time.

as an american, it doesn't sound THAT american to me tbh.

I said this weeks ago. People seem to be confusing picking up idioms and expressions with accents. The accent may change too over time, but the idioms and expressions will happen far sooner.

England is one of the few countries in the world where some people obsess about accents and the level of fakeness/authenticitiy. It's actually quite xenophobic and inherently racist. I say England and not UK because Scotland and Ireland are definitely not like their English counterparts at all in this manner.

I lived in Australia for two years in my early twenties and picked up a bit of an accent. It's easily done especially if you are younger.

That might apply if Ricky and Katie were on an American reality show

They're not though, they are English people, born and bred ... on an English TV show, where the majority of contestants are also English

Yes but both Ricky and Katie hang out with Frankie, Renee and Aubrey a lot so it's only natural I think that they would speak with a slight American twang sometimes. I'm pure English and I don't have a problem with it!

Not only does Katie live in the US but I think her grand father is American too.
