I don't even notice them calling each other mate.

RG, can I come out of the corner yet?

I didn't even pay that much attention to it really. It was them having a conversation about Liv/Whites to me. Last night with the whole family night thing was very coupley to me as it's definitely something 2 parents debate over with a child, especially a teenage one.

Them being a happy couple is fine with me too. Granted I wouldn't object to some naughty stuff though.

I don't notice either.

Do you still have a liking for P-arse? If so stay in your corner. If you've renounce your liking of him you may return to the rest of us, on probation mind .

It isn't necessarily negativity if some don't like the way things are written etc.I dislike that term being used so often these days.People getting upset with others being 'negative'-there is a difference between not liking something and expressing that, and being negative.I am not negative overall and I enjoyed tonight's scenes and don't mind at all the 'mate' thing. However,I can see why some don't like it much and that's fine. Also I have said it a good few times that I am frustrated at things since the reunion,in the way that the boys are together.I would prefer them to be written differently but I accept how it is

I had to watch it twice. It was definitely a joke. Chas warned Robert that Liv had been having tantrum and the first thing Robert said when he saw Aaron was mate you need to learn to control yourself and stop kicking off like that.

You weren't supposed to take it as this is now how Robert talks to Aaron now that they are together.

If you live 'Up North' as some of us do (& where emmerdale is close to) you hear the word 'Mate' used often - in anger to get a point across - as a way to start a conversation - yes, even as a term of endearment. It doesn't mean anything much. It's just the way we are.

Yep, he used it to greet him they've both used it and in different contexts. I remember Robert using it while tapping his arm just as the police brought Liv in. (Iv seen a lot of people on Twitter unhappy at the arms tapping too)I hear it a lot 'oop Norf' too. And you cant get anymore Yorkshire than the city that lends itself to the nameFor greeting/endearment. My hubby and his mates or at work. And the tone of voice of which words are said lends to the way they should be taken. Haha Yorkshire is so tricky,I get what you mean sugding.

Yes I have watched again and the Mate word did form part of a banter type line rather than a one on one conversation so quite appropriate.

Sincerely i don't know how this thing started out

Lol It makes me laugh. My mantra is what happens behind closed doors remains there

And i am sure that our boys as i said earlier have plenty of pet names for each others.

I agree. I think Rob would be his pet name for him.

As previously mentioned, Robert did call Chrissie babe, maybe even honey/hon. Of the two, I think Robert would do it more but understand that Aaron is not receptive to pet names and not initiate.

Just to chime in quickly on the other points, I am so not a fan of the 'mate' references. If they are not going to use pet names, just say Robert or Aaron instead of mate. For me, I don't like how in many of their scenes together, Aaron has his arms crossed, a defensive stance body language wise. Maybe it is just his normal stance. I will admit that when Robert was on the computer at the table, I really wanted Aaron to either put both hands on the back of Robert's chair or just get his PDA on and put a hand on Robert's shoulder.

I know EE is a different network, but what time does their show air? Chryed, love them or hate them, where very affectionate to one another, ILY's, hand holding, kiss hello or good bye, hugs, cuddling on a sofa for a night in.

P. S. Don't even get me started how loved up Chrolli was shown. Yes, a German soap but early time slot. AWZ with Roman and Deniz as well.

**Phew! Finally able to comment and catch up.**

Yes, yes, and yes. Playing catch up, but just posted my hatred for MATE as well. As I have mentioned before, my son is 24 and even when he was in his teens (he came out at 13), he never said hey listen friend.

I think, for me, because it is widely known that they are a couple and mate is to formal and that may just be me still getting to understand UK lingo and when to properly use it.

I don't know why they just can't call one another by their names. I too am in the camp where I don't believe either would refer to the other with a pet name.

Devil's advocate, why does it bother you that some don't like mate? Just an opinion on how it is written, no worries either way.

Mate is definitely not formal and certainly not up north here where ED is filmed. It's basically the go to term for endearment or even just a casual acquaintance. Notice how often Danny uses it on twitter?

I think maybe they should use their own names too generally speaking and I do think they have done more often than not but in this episode instance like sderrr says it was in a joke context anyway.

It doesn't 'bother me' nit picking bothers me and this feels like a nit picking issue gripe.

And yes im up late because I cant sleep so bored.

Oh and Cain and Charity might have had a raunchy plot device scene and people might want that for Robron but it has damaged Charity completely. She is looking desperate, needy and pitiful for someone who is a strong independent woman, that is sad really.

Many thanks! I had no idea.

I have never been a fan of Charity but I do enjoy the free wheelin' antics of Cain.

Robron and raunchy do not belong in the same sentence, just OOC for our boys. So glad I missed that discussion.

Ha! I am an insomniac but just finished a 7 week temp job and am enjoying the fact that I get to stay up a bit late.

**Just followed Danny on Twitter, but normally only stop by his page if someone has posted a link!**

You could tell it was a Thursday. How many more times do they have to emphasize that Charity is a desperate slut?. If they had real guts they would bump her off instead of James, and they could have a great whodunit?. Who finally snapped? Ross, Cain or one of her ex-clients.

It's partly a class thing. Aaron is working class, I suppose Robert is middle class. If you are working class you tend to have "mates" rather than "friends" (if you are upper class you have "pals". Also certain sections of society would refer to "my significant other" which sounds pretentious (I think) or "my partner" or "my boy friend" (though personally I think it is a bit disconcerting to hear 50+ men refer to their "boyfriend".

"Mate" covers a multitude of relationships of a friendly nature, and I think it is totally in character for Aaron to use it.

ITV is very much a "family" channel and they dare not upset their advertisers (or viewers). There have been a couple of rather silly complaints this week in the media for "inapppropriate" langauge used in both Emmerdale and Coronation Street.I am sure neither were meant to offend, but, hey this is the age when people demand to be offended and go out looking for it. That and the fact that it would be OOC for Robert and Aaron to get loved up in public means that their relationship will also be one of feelings and gestures rather than the drop-your-drawers antics of Charity. "Rob" is a good pet name, but I wonder how you couldshorten "Aaron"?

But just imagine if they used the old stereotypes and called each other "duckie" or darling!

This is a postmodern love affair conducted by two very natural down to earth men. I am just glad to see them being with each other without fighting, angry words, threats of violence or wondering eyes. They just look natural together.

Ah that's interesting. The comment about Robron having any raunchy stuff being OOC..... well consider the affair, which was VERY raunchy at times. We have gone from one of the most raunchy affairs/relationships in soap (and also as a side note, everyone noting a new very sexually comfortable and open Aaron) to thinking seeing anything like that would be completely OOC and nobody being able to imagine us getting them scenes. Can really nobody see that shift?

Do you think Robron won't be in it tonight? Unless i got my spoiler days wrong, which is possible as i;m so out the loop these days, but wasn't it mentioned for tonight Robert persuading Aaron it's right to go after the Whites? But didn't this already happen in that scene last night?
