I think it's far more common than people would really know. I think many of us have pushed a parent to their limits as a child and usually it was enough to make us never go so far again. Suppose when it comes to sexuality though it's not something you've done 'wrong' so to be punished for it is even more damaging I feel.
Vic asked Robert last year if it was because of Jack too why he'd kept it hidden and he didn't respond then either.

. That's awful. Im sure that left quite an impression, im not sure I could ever forget something like that. I suppose that it the type of thing Robert was going through (regardless of what people believe in terms of changing backstory etc), it's actually canon now and isn't something that definitely didn't/couldn't have happened anyway.
