I spend a week in America and adopt a full accent right away. This guy is completely American but sounds British. Couldn't they cast an American (or Canadian I guess) actor for the role?

Sharon told Phil that Mark went to a British school so has the accent to impress the girls. A silly excuse but better than a dreadful put on accent like his sister had.

It's even worse than Vicki Fowler. British actress but at least she put on an American accent for the initial period. Then she dropped it. With Mark Jr, they're not even pretending to give a crap.

Really don't see the point of him so far. Grant isn't sticking around long and Michelle isn't gonna return. Plus I don't see SOC being such a sucker for nostalgia the way DTC is.

God knows but the TPTB as probably still embarrassed by the tongue-in-cheek references to Scarlett Johnson's (the last actress to play Vicki Fowler) American accent which she was meant to gradually lose but someone forget the fact they film out of sequence and someone could sound markably difference in the same episode.

The claim his accent if due to him going to a international/British school in the United States is ridiculous as the accent would have to be Received Pronunciation not Cockney/Estuary; couldn't they just say he had being living in London/ the UK?

Yeah although it makes sense for her to have a British accent - she probably went to an English-speaking school in Portugal, whereas Mark Jr lived in an English-speaking country so would go likely go to a 'normal' school in reality.

Oh okay, that would make sense. I thought i missed some kind of explanation of her being schooled in England.

Yuck. I've lived here for 2.5 years and I don't sound in the slightest bit American. Affected much?

Why couldn't they have hired an American actor? I'm sure they could've found one living in the UK! There are American people living in the UK you know! They didn't even try!

The excuses to cover his british accent was pathetic. Mark has lived in the states since birth. He may of well have gone to a british school, but we would at least have an american twang in his accent.

I was born in the US, lived their for the first several years of my life and then moved to the UK. I still go back to the US at any time I can due to family. I have a british accent with an american twang to it. The explanations for Mark didn't add up. They just didn't want a Vicky Fowler 2.0 mess on their hands.

Surely a decent actor could do an American accent

Sandi Toksvig mentions how she came to the UK with a broad New York accent and wasn't well received for it amongst her peers. Now she's posh voice, no money in her own words.

The British school wouldn't explain it for a moment seeing as the US is an English speaking country. He would be exposed to American accents every day of his life and on TV and radio.

They learned from the mistake that was Vicki? But speaking of Vicki it just makes Mark's accent all the more strange doesn't it.

They could have hired me. I ain't an actress but neither are half of the cast lmao.

Course explaining why I'm half black half puerto rican with a louisiana meets atlanta accent could be difficult. Still better than 'English school' though

My guess is he's doing a Ross Geller - gets nervous in front of strangers and along comes the fake British accent.

A British school in America. I never knew those even existed. Even then it's just a lousy excuse. But the Actor is soo good looking.

I find it almost insulting to the EE audience that they explain it away with the line about an English school. Sure, Michelle would talk with a English accent, and I guess when he was younger he may start speaking with an English accent because that is who he is learning from, but they guy he thinks is his father is American no? Vicki had an American accent, and even if he did go to a British school he'd still be exposed to American culture, and people and would assimilate!?

To be fair, I spent all my life living abroad and I still have an English accent. It can happen.

Yeah the Vicki Fowler accent was a farce, fake American accent then a few weeks away with Sharon and she had a prefect English accent. Def one of EE's most ridiculous moments.

Even if he was attending such a thing it would be meaningless as everyone else in the US speaks English too. Therefore the main accent he would be exposed to would be American not English.

EE do not employ people good enough to have other voices.
