Hollyoaks: The John Paul McQueen and James Nightingale Appreciation Thread
It seems that we might finally have a good romance coming up for JP (it's been a long time since he had anything decent!!!!). I think JP and James work really well together, and have the potential to be a really interesting and engaging pairing. And both actors are good, especially Gregory Finnegan, who's impressing me more day after day.
It's amazing how quickly I have become invested in *cough*obsessed with*cough* this couple. Anyway, I'm rooting for these two to get their sh*t together and make it work!! Anyone else is??? |

I was waiting for a thread on these two but I didn't want to be the one to start it so thank you. 😳 I must admit though, I am very new to HO. I've only been watching it little under a year but I do think James Nightingale is one of the best additions to the cast and Gregory players James well. James has heeps of chemistry with John Paul. I do want them together but I am quite happy for the show to string it out. I'd like to see James go through a proper journey and development before they become a official couple.

LOL I wondered how long it would be until there was a JP/James thread!
![]() James, as a character, has come a long way since the caricature panto villain he was initially written as, and credit to Gregory for making him more fleshed-out and developing some layers. James definitely has a good chemistry with JP - it's probably the most believable gay pairing the show has had for a long time. I guess if you throw enough random characters together, eventually one pairing will hit the target! ![]() I don't think it's enough to make me 'ship' them as such - I'd have to be invested in both characters for that, and I'm afraid I'm not really that into JP. But I think Gregory's acting would be enough to draw me into the SL and keep me watching to see where it goes

![]() I totally agree. HO need to learn how to properly develop a storyline gradually over time like it used to do, instead of everything happening overnight without logic or build up. James and JP are already quite smitten with each other, I think, but James is such a mess of a human being, he needs to work on himself if he ever wants to have a chance to have a proper relationship. |

But anyway, the all-important question - what would their ship name be?

People are using McNight!

McNight? 😀
![]() But ... I dunno ... seems a bit 'samey' - all of JP's ship names are 'Mc-something'. People need to get their thinking caps on and shake it up a bit!

One thing I am happy about is John Paul splittting up with Scott and that's not because I am desperate for John P and James to get together (at least not yet) but because I don't want this story to revolve around a love triangle. It should never be about John Paul being undecided between two men. It need to be about James allowing himself to care for someone and break down those walls. At the crux of it, it is James's story to tell. The 'mummy issues' is much more interesting angel because not only are we learning why James is so machavillian and calculating but essentially it will freeing himself from Marnies clutches that will really flesh him out as a character. We are already seeing that come through and his scenes with JP this week have been pure gold but it's going to be a ongoing challenge. At least in the mean time we don't have to watch Scott fussing over John Paul, who would be just settling. It's obvious that JP will get his sight back and then the show can move them to the next stage in their development without Scott hanging around like a lost puppy.

I'm still not sure Scott is out if the picture for good... It seems too good to be true. I'm still afraid that JP, in his vulnerable state, will run back to him. I really hope not, I couldn't bear it ugh

Wooo! I was just thinking about making a thread for this pairing.
Gotta say, tonight's E4 totally gutted me. I obviously wouldn't expect (or want) James to be redeemed overnight, that would be boring, but for him to twist the knife like that... He really hates himself doesn't he? He really does have feelings for John Paul and I guess this is his twisted and wrong-headed way of expressing that care/affection for him by getting JP well away from him so he can't hurt him (again). I'm really rooting for these two now, they have great chemistry! Also, holy moly but I absolutely love Gregory's voice. I could listen to him talk all day. |

I've just rewatched the episode because there were some scenes I hadn't seen yet (like JP breaking up with Scott...hopefully it sticks). What a beautifully sad episode.
Hasn't poor JP been trough enough already?? ![]() Do we know how old James is supposed to be?? |

I'm not sure. He looks in his mid thirties to me.

Thanks Francy. Sounds interesting. A few things have got me thinking though.
Recent interviews have implied that somthing happened in James's past that has made him the way he is. Also I remember a few weeks ago after JP and James slept together, James told him to keep away because he'd ruin his life. This is EXACTLY what Marnie told him yesterday. Now I'm really showing my James memory .....when Rachel died, Nathan was pissed at James for not coming to the funeral to which James replied "I don't do funerals". This has led me to think that someone, potentially a past love for James's died? And maybe it's something he was indirectly responsible for? ( hence the 'I'd ruin your life' statements)? I also think whatever happened Marnie is completely aware of and has uses this to manipulate James. I know its a lot of speculation and i could be completely wrong but i do think resistance to be with John Paul is more than his mothers hold over him, though it plays a large part that goes without saying. |

That's an interesting theory. We will see!! I admit I want everything to happen now, I don't have any patience to wait for the inevitable blackholes and all the developments!!
![]() I also need to go back and watch some of the James stuff I haven't seen, if I can find it somewhere. In the last year I despised the show so much that I have pretty much stopped following it, I kept up only with JP's storyline (despite hating everything about it) out of loyalty. So yeah, I need to go back and watch stuff. |

Don't get me started on the word black hole. I was a huge Christian and Syed fan (eastenders), possibly my favourite fictional pair ever and I had to endure endless black holes ( and character assassination) by the very man who is developing these two. 🙄
Lots of previous experience with soaps is why I dread any new storyline now!! Let's hope they don't mess up with James and James/JP. |

Evening!
So last night as I was messing about on YouTube, I discovered the John Paul and James storyline and needless to say....I am hooked! ![]() Can't believe that I am actually rooting for JP to be with anyone other than Craig ![]() The actor who plays James is quite charismatic. |

I love that Gregory said he was hoping for the relationship to develop and that he thinks there's real feelings between James and John Paul.
I was rewatching some scenes tonight and I was reminded that Carter, James's ex, said something in passing about Marnie being to blame for them splitting. James was in the dark about this and I wonder if she's not been intentionally sabotaging her son's relationships for years! She's definitely a huge part of why James is the way he is. The Hollyoaks spoilers article on DS today also mentioned something about John Paul discovering a secret from James' past, so hopefully their relationship will continue to develop. |

If James sorts out his brain and gets out of his mother's clutches, I can see JP and James working in the long run. |
