Mark Jr's absurd English accent...
Is him speaking with an English accent seriously bothering anyone else?
I just can't go the absurd excuse also. He went to an English college and got an English accent for the girls ![]() That is hilarious. He would still have an American accent. He has lived in America all his life ffs. Excuse me while I just pop to Wales for a couple of years and trade my Scottish accent that I've had all my life, for a Welsh one ![]() Why not have him speak in an American accent!!? It's not hard to do an American twang at least. Just even a hint of it ffs. Bet he says rubbish instead of trash and everything.

I agree!
A character who has grown up in America should at least have a bit of a twang! It's rather unrealistic that Mark seems to be a bit posh. |

Just get over it. I am more concerned about the stories and acting that the character is going to have not a silly accent.

Everytime he asked about his dad, Chelle locked him in the basement and forced him to watch Downtown Abbey on a loop.

Vicky arrived in EE with a (terrible) American accent, which she lost overnight. Seem to remember the reason being that it sounded out of place on the square, although not sure if that was the real reaon.

I agree about the accent. It's irritating and for me it's made worse by the hand-waving from TPTB that we would somehow forget or putting on an accent wasn't deemed relevant/important. It's yet another suspension of disbelief and EE has racked up so many lately it beggers belief. I'm sick of EE treating their viewers like idiots and churning and old crap in the hope we just accept it.

Why they couldn't have just employed an American actor to play the part I do not know.

There are a lot of factors when it comes to someone picking up an accent. If you are literally surrounded by people with one type of accent for even a year your voice changes to mimic them, but you're more likely to lose it the younger you are. A friend of mine from Australia moved to the UK about 5 years ago and lost his accent entirely within 3 years and he's 21 now.
If Mark Jr. had been in England for a couple of weeks, you would all have a perfectly valid reason to find it absurd, but the story is that he's been going to school in England for years so it perfectly matches up. Also it depends on who he grew up around, let's not forget that he was neighbours with Sharon for a long time and who knows if Michelle was part of a British expat community or something whilst in the States. Given Michelle's age, it's likely she didn't lose her accent, so it would make sense if Mark mimicked her. And is her husband Tim an American or British? Too many factors involved for people to moan about, it's perfectly reasonable for him to talk with an English accent. |

Maybe he can switch accents, like Jon Barrowman? Kids are much more adaptable to language and accents, although I do find it odd that he speaks with an English accept or that there would even be an 'English' school in a country that speaks English as their first language. Not like he was in Europe.

EastEnders has always been the same, foreigners just aren't welcome. It's one of the show's biggest setbacks, they'll even make up implausible rubbish like this to save having an American Fowler. It's ludicrous really and quite insulting that they think viewers won't accept a different accent. They've all done it though let's be honest - I mean Bethany Platt should have an Italian twang and Peter Barlow hasn't a trace of his years spent in Scotland.

Now ask yourself if his fully developed English accent with no hint of American is perfectly reasonable. |

It's a bit strange. If he decided on a British accent to 'impress the girls' - at what point was that? As a small child? Or was he speaking with an American accent until his hormomes kicked in and then started with a British one? If he went to a British speaking school (why would that even be necessary in America?!) then shouldn't he be speaking in RP which is what they'd undoubtedly teach, rather than this weird slightly cockney/RP hybrid?
To be honest I'm not really seeing the point of him so far. His only redeeming feature is his prettiness. |

Whatever their 'excuse' is to be fair, it's a crap one. |

I personally find it incredible that everyone is getting so uptight over this- it's not real lol We sit here and happily accept so many ludicrous and outlandish plots with soaps- yet suddenly when it comes to this boy's accent people are outraged at the lack of realism??
How about the fact market stall holders can afford the rent in 3-4 or even 5 bedroom houses in London? It's a soap, not a documentary. Yes the excuse for his British accent was weak and not a great move but move past it. |

Who are you referring to here?
I know they are not in it anymore- but they are the liberties with realism the show always takes. Sonia lives there now and she is a nurse while Tina does the off shift in the Cafe- again there is no way they could afford it. Even the likes of Stacey and Martin in there flat- which is at least a 2 bedroom- in the E20 section of London they are looking at about 2k a month in rent alone. |
