At the moment i have 2 miniature Dachshunds and an ancient chocolate Labrador, i used to have another Dachshund and a Greyhound.
One of the Dachshunds would shout at everyone and do a bunk, the other, who is brain damaged, would just sit, look at the wall and smile, the labrador would just fart and fall over. Fair bursting with pride, I am

Poor special dach. Oh bless.

We had a special dog - a keeshond lab X - a beauty but, boy, was she was a dope. At one point we fostered a blind pup who you think would have trouble navigating the furniture but if you watched the pair of them it looked like the little blind pup was our dog's carer, helping her navigate the house while the big lump walloped and crashed into furniture.

And had no clue how huge she was. Tried to climb into drawers and cupboards. Looked a sight reversing into and wedging her massive arse into the smallest spaces. Looking at you as if to say 'What? This works.'

Oh yours sounds excellent, i love dogs that just generally fail at being dogs. Dachshunds are naturally incredibly intelligent, hence they have a tendency to be neurotic with people outside of their own family, which, i suppose is why Lupin (my speshul Daxy) stands out even more. She was a caesarian i did in practice, she couldn't be ars8d to breathe when she came out, for around 10 minutes she just laid there smiling, hasn't stopped smiling since. Loops is defo spesh

I adore dogs and your post cracked me up! I know it sounds stupid but my heart melts when I see the back of a dogs head (I mean I love all of them but there's something so vulnerable and adorable about that part).

Did she forgive you eventually?

Dippy, you sound like you know dogs and I'm interested in getting a miniature dachshund. Would you mind telling me a bit about them from personal experience please?

I still haven't mastered how to multiple quote, but I absolutely love your threads.

DippyD what a wonderful woman you are.xx

I'm a massive dog lover, as I get older, I like them infinitely more than many people.

Work commitments precludes us having a dog at the moment, but my in laws have two Dandi Dindmonds who are just adorable and a wee stray of indeterminate parentage who is the absolute love of my life (apart from my darling hubby of course).

I can't manage to do a complete circle in the park as I stop everyone who has a dog Mad about all of them.

I wish they wouldn't take animals in there after all they can't ask them if they want to go.

I'm inclined to agree with you.

When Jason's wee dog Chloe came in and he couldn't greet her, I felt it was cruel on her.

I'm the same. (About liking them more than people and loving them infinitely!).

I've not heard of Dandi Dindmonds!

Edit - to multi quote - you see the 4 boxes at the bottom of texts? The third one with a + sign? You click on that at the bottom of every post you want to quote.

The poor little dog suddenly found itself in a strange area with a lot of strange people making a lot of noise. She didn't really relax until James went to her and picked her up. Perfectly normal as there were too many distractions. It she had met James somewhere quiet like the diary room I am sure her reaction to him would have been more immediate and what others might perceive as normal.

Thanks so much doormouse...at last I'll be able to engage fully. You're a darling

Sorry I misspelt...it's dandi dinmonts. They are terriers, and sadly are becoming very rare.

I love all dogs though, doesn't matter to me if they are pedigree, small, medium or large...love the bones of them all.

We got mini long haired ones mouse, as they are the least wappy of them all, i do like the smooths very much though.

Dachshunds are not for the faint hearted, they need experienced owners as they are very strong willed and intelligent, they are scent hounds and love to go hunting down the fields (i never let them catch anything, but they love a good chase and it keeps the local rabbits fit)
Like any scent hound, once they are on a trail they are hard to call off, so brill re-call is a must. They treat strangers with a mixture of disdain and dislike and have a tendency to shout obscenities at people in the street who try to stroke them, very snobbish and stuck up, unless there is cheese on offer.
Mine are trained to find hidden cash and lost people, both very easy to do, but they won,t work for the love of it, they have to be trained using their fave treat....both activities we just do for fun and to keep their brains occupied or else they think up, much less wanted behaviours to do.

With their own family, incredibly funny, comical, brave loyal, loving, hilarious dogs. You could never ask for a better guard dog around the home.

Health wise, they MUST be kept slim, fit and active or else their spinal discs collapse, alot of people will tell you never to allow them to jump, but i have owned them for over 20 years and, as long as they are fit, you will be fine

One of mine was brought up with my pet rats and when she was young, everyday when we got back, she would go and call for her fave ratty mate, i,d open his cage and he would climb out and the 2 of them would cause havoc in my house, tearing up down the stairs together, diving into piles of carrier bags and as soon as i rattled the rat treat box, to see where they were, both big male rat and little daxy pup would come belting up to me. Happy days

Lol, have always worked with animals since leaving 6th form, i worked at a well known rescue centre for 2 years, it nearly finished me off....if you love animals, it,s not the best job, you really do see the dark side of people, hence i only lasted 2 years. I had to get out for my own sanity.

Dandi Dinmont,s are not very common nowadays, lovely, sparky little things.

Wow! Lots of information, thank you! Do they need lots of walking? Or is a very large garden ok? ie, if they couldn't be walked every day, would that be a problem?

Alot of elderly people used to own them and hence they weren,t walked very much (generalisation of course), Dachshunds started to get a bad name for themselves being aggressive....i personally think it was a combination of bad breeding lines and boredom, so i would say, the more you walk them, the better they are. If you couldn,t walk them one day, you would need to do some sort of mental activity with them, or you,ll run into trouble.

They fell out of favour during and after the war (being German), but are making a comeback now. The dog toto in the wizard of Oz, was originally cast as a Dachshund, but it was changed to a Cairn terrier due to a certain German man who was, er hem, misbehaving at the time.

Dandies are high on my list of must-haves come the day I can turn into the mad old dog lady. I love their wiggy hair and how they look like they've got the wrong head on their body! I'm all about rescue dogs but I'd have a puppy to support rare British breeds like these and Skye Terriers.

I haven't seen the clip of James' dog but on the whole I've never been comfortable with dogs visiting BB. It's an incredibly alien environment for them full of over excitable strangers. Then, having had weeks to settle down without their owner, they're reunited for just a few minutes then snatched away again. It's all far too stressful, if I was a HM with a dog I wouldn't want it exploited in that way.

Mind you, if they ever started having proper doggy housemates I might just start watching again!
