I wouldn't disagree. Tarja Turunen, who is also an opera star in her own right, has said that singing Opera and Symphonic Metal require very different techniques.

However the requirements of a singer in a Symphonic Metal band is that you have to have a technically great voice and be able to deliver live without the use of autotune, which so many "singers" seem to need these days.

Depends.
If its music that depends on superb singing and nothing else, then a good voice and technique are the most important thing.
If its music thats all about image, style a fashion, the who cares?

Billy Joe Royal had a great voice. i've watched that video of him with Joe South and Tommy Roe and all three are good singers. Probably you could say they are technically good too, but they don't show off, just sing the songs. Maybe it's down to his image - Billy Joe Royal looks a bit fresh-faced but Joe South looks like a mean dude (and he was no mean songwriter too).

And then you get artists like Bowie or Kate Bush who embrace the whole panoply of music, lyricism, dance, movement, image and produce artistic works which involve all of these elements in a creative whole. So it is not a binary thing; singing/musicianship versus image.

Agreed with both points here, on a side note, I have never forgiven Jenkins for destroying "Bring me to life".

I think the classic X Factor example of this for me is Run by Snow Patrol vs Leona Lewis vs Luke Friend.

The heart and emotion of the song - IMO - is far, FAR better portrayed by the original and by Luke Friend than the Leona Lewis version.

I love that clip! I love watching them sing "The Games People Play" at the end!

God bless you always!!!

Holly

P.S. To me, Billy Joe's voice only got better. I love his 1987 released album named The Royal Treatment.
