Why? I really don't get this Maria love. So many other characters would work better as the center of the show Sarah, Michelle, Leanne, Gail, Liz. or Tracy would all be better options IMHO.

Move the action over to Mawdsley Street with a bunch of new characters and their reaction to the events of Coronation Street.

On paper it may be but when you look at character appearances I think you'll see EE tends to operate with roughly the same number as Corrie.

Also EE only does 4 episodes a week, Corrie soon to go 6, that is why EE can and should cut the cast.

If anything they need to extend Corrie's cast to replace a large ageing group, many in their 60s and 70s.
EE only has one or two over 70 and they are hardly regulars anymore.

I've looked at the entire cast and presently I would write out Izzy, Sinead, Billy and Caz.

I'd kill all four at once in the disaster (though Phelan would kill Billy personally after he discovers his crimes, and throw him in the wreckage, not before Billy leaves Todd a vague but telling voicemail about knowing the truth!). Chesney would move back in with Fiz/Tyrone, and Gary would also be a single Dad and move back in with Anna.

On thin ice (or needing revitalising / one shot at a decent story) would be:

- Robert
- Andy
- Steph
- Luke

The rest of the cast for me are strong enough to stay, provided their roles are maintained and tweaked where necessary. I do think we need a new Northern powerhouse family at some point with a strong, fiery matriarch cut from classic Corrie cloth and a couple of grown up kids. Could well be time for the Rovers to have new occupancy.

Izzy and Robert. I think the rest can stay.

Ok here's my axe list and how I would make them all go:

Phelan- I can't stand him. Awful character. I'd have him killed in a whodunnit story

Clayton Hibbs- crap character, shit actor. I'd make David kill him (tho that's probably gonna happen anyway)

Macca Hibbs- is he still part of the show? I wouldn't kill him off I'd just send him back to where he came from

Callum's gang (Macca, Clayton and the other Dog and Gun blokes) are pointless now that Callum and Kylie are gone, and Gemma has changed her ways and become a better person so they're not needed anymore

Caz Hammond- another character I hate. Maybe she could attack someone and go to prison

Maybe Robert Preston? I used to like Robert but lately he's become so unlikeable, and he's more wooden than the Bistro bar. What's the point of him having the Bistro anyway, we all know Nick will get it back

Also don't like Tracy (bitch) and Amy (another bitch) but I wouldn't get rid of them, I'd just make them nicer

If you just take a minute to read through this thread so far then if every character mentioned was axed there wouldn't be a cast!!

Because you don't personally like a character does not mean they need to be 'axed!!!!!'

We don't need any character 'centre of the show' like Carla was imo!!
I really hope they learned their lesson from the way Carla was ruined as a character through ridiculous overuse!!
Agree with Lea that Maria deserves a much more prominent role than she has had, along with the characters you mention (except Tracy who has been almost as overexposed as Carla) & I think Steph has the potential to be a bigger character too if they develop her a little more, but no one character, ever again should be ruined forever like Carla was by making them 'centre of the show' imo!!

Just caught up with Friday's episodes and now I'm thinking the axings need to be radical and go deep and Steve should be number 1 When is this character going to grow up? Again and again he runs away from problems and lies to the face of whoever his wife is this week day in and day out. He truly is a disgusting character who seems to mange to get away with it because he is easy on the eye and a bit of a jack the lad.

The rest as follows:
Rita + Emily - way past their sell by dates.
Gail - tedious.
Sophie - boring and unpleasant.
Sally - snobby and sanctimonious.
Tim - not remotely funny.
Fiz + Tyrone - enough already
Kev - if he's still in it
Dev - irritating beyond belief.

Caz and Izzy should go for definite. Izzy has run her course now and will hold Gary back. I know they both agreed the other night about when they meet new partners, but that would just be tedious. Let Izzy go off to join her sister and mum. I'm not sure if Emily will return to be honest. The rest of the characters i'm fine with. You have a lot of residents on the same street in real life so I don't have a problem with there being so many.

Ms Oates needs to wield the axe and be ruthless like that new EE EP.

Some of these characters have outstayed their welcome and it feels like their stories have been told a thousand times before. With an extra episode I don't think they have the balls to do anything drastically.

Izzy's 'SICK' shirt summed it all up. I'm sick of her whining. That whole clan needs to clear off. As does Chesney and Sinead. Luke and Gandy are spare parts and wish they cut their losses with the nu Connors. In an ideal world Sean and Michelle would be goners, but 'PC' Corrie love them to bits.
