Anyone else notice lately, that when a character in soaps takes a few months off, they usually end up leaving for good shortly after they return?

Janine in EE took 6 months off in 2013, but when she returned, she ended up leaving again.
Roxy Mitchell took 4 months off at the beginning of 2016, now she is due to leave again next year for good.
Rosie Webster in Corrie took a six month break, then decided to leave for good.
Carla and Peter took a six month break in 2014, they both subsequently left later, although Peter is due to come back soon.
Michael Rodwell took a six month break earlier this year and is now set to be written out again for good at Christmas.

Loads of other examples, but it seems to me that whenever a character in soap wants to take a break for whatever reason, their days seem to be numbered shortly afterwards. Seeing as Sophie Webster is due to take a short break in the autumn, I wonder will she quit for good next year? (One can hope)

Rita Simmons just didn't have a break though. She was doing panto. Plus her upcoming exit wasn't down to her.

And Les Dennis was doing a theatre show as well. But i think someone like Les Dennis was never going to do Corrie for ever and ever. I am surprised he lasted as long as he did.

Hayley Cropper left after a break. So did Val in Emmerdale.

I think it's more likely that actors who take extended breaks aren't happy for whatever reason (maternity leave is slightly different!). Soaps are supposedly fairly high pressure for actors - little rehearsal time and lots of new scripts - especially compared to theatre so after seeing "how the other half lives" could make quitting look more attractive, let alone the temptation to play other characters.

Julie said that during her time away from Corrie, she forgot how much she enjoyed playing a different character. So that played a part in her leaving

As for Charlie Hardwick, there was a two year gap between her break and her eventual exit.
