19/8/16 Coronation Street Emergency Thread
RickLopez
19-08-2016
5 minutes to go. Sorry if hasty.

Spoilers:

Episode 1:

Spoiler
Reminding Steve that she's at her most fertile, Michelle suggests they meet for an afternoon lie down. Liz is disapproving and tells Steve it's time he told Michelle the truth, that he doesn't want another baby. Seizing the opportunity to escape, Steve grabs an airport run and heads off. Put out to discover Steve's done a runner, Michelle confides in Maria and Kate that she and Steve are supposed to be trying for a baby. At Kate's suggestion, Michelle downloads a new pregnancy app and is shocked to realise she's five days late. Having returned from his airport run, Steve plucks up the courage to face Michelle and tell her the truth. Maria calls in the corner shop to buy a pregnancy testing kit for Michelle. Aidan clocks her purchase with alarm, worried that Maria may be pregnant. Maria and Kate wait on tenterhooks while Michelle does her pregnancy test.

Her mind made up, Leanne spells out to Liz that neither she nor Steve will have anything to do with her baby. Liz is saddened. Leanne breaks the news to Simon that they're going to live with Toyah in Liverpool. Simon's horrified and confronts Nick, hoping he can shed some light on Leanne's sudden decision to up sticks and move away. Nick is stunned at the news and as Leanne approaches their table, she realises she has some explaining to do.

As Eva enthusiastically shows Aidan some house brochures, it's clear his heart isn't it and when Mary regales them with tales of her motorhome, he's only too glad of the distraction.

Izzy tells Gary that she doesn't want a pretend relationship and that it would probably be best all round if he moved out. Gary's taken aback. Alya orders Zeedan to get his thinking cap on as it's their grandparents 45th wedding anniversary and they need to plan something special.

Episode 2:

Spoiler

Steve finally admits to Michelle he doesn't want a baby. Utterly devastated, Michelle reveals she's pregnant. She confides in Liz that she wishes Steve had been honest from the outset as now it's too late and she's carrying his baby. Liz is stunned. Michelle finds Steve buried deep in thought in the back yard. Telling her how sorry he is for upsetting her, will Steve come clean about his fling with Leanne?

Begging Simon to go along with her story, Leanne tells Nick that she's only going to Liverpool for a week or two as Toyah needs a shoulder to cry on. Nick's supportive and offers to look after Simon while she's away. Leanne's consumed with guilt. Putting the ball firmly in his court, Leanne tells Simon he can either move to Liverpool with her or stay in Weatherfield with Nick. Simon's torn. Still reeling from the news, Liz tells Leanne about Michelle's pregnancy.

When Eva tries to interest Aidan in more property details, he flips and telling her to give it a rest, storms out. Eva's hurt. Aidan corners Maria and quizzes her about the pregnancy testing kit. Maria assures him it was for a mate as Aidan breathes a sigh of relief. Aidan calls at Eva's flat and handing her gifts, apologises for his earlier outburst. Will Eva thaw? Leanne breaks the news to Eva that she's moving to Liverpool. Eva excitedly suggests to Aidan that he should move into the flat. Will Aidan agree?

When Zeedan reveals Rana's plan of a sapphire anniversary party with a blue theme, Alya reluctantly admits it's a great idea. When Alya suggests Rana should invite her parents to the anniversary party, Rana's not keen. Will Izzy agree to Gary's suggestion that they should continue to live together as friends and provide Jake with a loving home

Then this one must take seniority.

What on earth makes a thread "official"? Surely anyone can start a thread about an episode?

There is a very fair and well-managed rota system for starting episode threads. Anyone can start a thread by messaging dullagj and putting themselves forward. Then, if there's a space, they will be asked to start a thread on a given date.

This has been working seamlessly for years. Surely you should know this already jsmith?

I don't recall voting for anyone for those positions.

Why would I know that? When I read an episode thread I go to the last page and work back to the end of the episode(s).

As far as I'm concerned, all posters are equal, with none more equal than others. I've no wish to start an episode thread, but if I had, then I'd start one. Early in the day.

You've been on the forum for many years, I assumed you would have known about this. Apologies if my assumption was offensive.

Every poster is equal and the rota system maintains that. What you're actually saying is 'I can do what I like and I will', which doesn't really sound like equality to me.

I think that what generally happens in this type of circumstance is that there's a mutual, but unspoken, agreement, and it works in practice.

I'm not quite sure how a rota (or any enforced) system can maintain equality. It seems to be more of a self-selected clique telling everyone else what to do.

While I'm not saying it's a case of 'I can do what I like and I will' (there are, after all, rules of civilised society), if everyone is in that position, then it is indeed equality.

As you have already stated that you have no wish to start a thread, and the emergency threadstarter, Rick in this case, had no objections to fms reverting to the rota-designated thread, I'm not really sure about what, or on whose behalf, you are arguing tbh.
Suffice to say, nobody is telling anyone else what to do. You, like everyone else, are free to ask to do a thread whenever you wish. Frankly, in some cases there are often more ep threads than there are volunteers, so I imagine dullagj would be more than grateful for new applicants.

I think it was the phrase "the official thread", in post 5, which I mainly objected to. This suggests to me some form of authority, to be imposed on other FMs.

Edited to add : By the way, can't you see a contradiction in these two sentences?

If I have to ask whether I can start a thread, and wait for permission, then someone is indeed telling me what to do. Or what I can't do, should my request be turned down.

You've said yourself that you have no wish to start an episode discussion thread so why is keeping this debate going of any interest to you? Other than being an opportunity to flex your debating skills and to demonstrate your dedication to the philosophy of equality.

Have a cup of tea and a biscuit instead.

I don't think that's the intention at all, in fact I know fine well even from the relatively short time I've been on the forum that it isn't!!
It's merely a way of making sure that half a dozen posters don't start threads which would be complete mayhem!!
There has to be some sort of order to proceedings & I think most of us are happy to leave the organising to Dj, who if I may say so does an excellent job of it!!
On the rare event when the allotted threadstarter forgets/suddenly has to work etc etc then there will always be someone kind enough, like Rick in this case to start an 'emergency thread' to make sure we at least aren't left without one at all!!
As it happens in this case, it seems Pandora was just slightly 'last minute' with posting but no harm done & thanks to both threadstarters!!
Pandora.

Oh, I feel quite awkward now.

I was asked to do Friday's thread, but I'm more used to being on the Emmerdale thread so it completely slipped my mind that people will have wanted the Corrie thread a good bit before 7.30 - just a moment of brain freeze. I didn't deliberately step on Rick's toes; I was right in the middle of putting mine up when he kindly stepped in!

The rota can seem a little insular I guess, but being the thread starter isn't really much of an honour. It just helps the forum from descending into chaos.

Just politeness really. If someone makes a comment, or asks a question, about a post of mine I feel it's only polite to reply. So now the question is : should I follow your advice and stop, or should I answer the posts after yours? Either way someone will complain.

Well jsmith, this thread has not been wasted because I have learned something1 This rota thing is all new to me - you learn something every day.

Lol!!! No problem Pandora!!
With me it's usually the opposite problem!! I'm normally getting back from work just before Corrie starts so whenever I do an episode thread i have to post it mid afternoon!! On at least one occasion it had disappeared off page one altogether & someone very kindly started another one!!
These days I usually ask some kind FM to 'bump' it for me if it's in danger of disappearing!!
