Looks like Android Nougat 7.0 may be released on the 22nd August 2016 and will be available on the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X. LG are doing a limited Beta on the G5 if you live in South Korea.

As usual most people will have a very long wait or will never see the update unless they want to root their device. If you are lucky enough to get the official update it is unlikely you will see it until Spring 2017.......

Sad but true. Two years of updates from the device release is the best you can hope for with Android OEMs. Here is a study of OEM updates for recent devices. Even then updates are done on a country by country basis that slows things down and is not reflected in this study.

Don't even mention VoLTE support

Android 6.0 Marshmallow was first released October 5, 2015. Updates arrived in two clusters: those that pushed out the update three months after the release and those that waited longer – a little over five months, according to Apteligent.

Motorola tried the update first on a smaller set of devices, such as the Moto X Pure Edition / Moto X Style, for about two months and then rolled it out more widely.
LG took the same approach starting with the LG G4 for about a month, while HTC basically just pushed the release out to all compatible devices from the beginning. Both Samsung and Sony waited over five months before releasing the update to compatible devices. ZTE has released the Android M update to only a small handful of devices starting with the Axon line of devices February 2016.

One of the most common complaints about consumer Android devices is how long it takes to get the latest Android OS update. Slow updates mean that consumers are behind the curve on enjoying new features and performance improvements as well as (more importantly) posing a severe security risk.
In fact the majority of devices are running Lollipop 35.5% while KitKat is 29.2% which will be 3 years old in October. Marshmallow is only on 15.2% and is almost a year old. Dreadful

Yeah some will look forward to getting this in 2019, this issue, the security updates and the profile settings like VoLTE badly need fixing.

I just don't understand why Google doesn't make it a requirement to do timely updates if you use Google Play Services...

This what I find most frustrating with the way Android is left in the hands of the manufacturers. There must be a way for Google to mandate the changes and updates are released in a timely manner. Samsung has improved somewhat and is pushing out security updates every other month, in addition with a couple of new features.

It needs to change, as for VoLTE its easier on MM even then its also down to the networks to shift their arses too.

Still in light of all of this I love my S7.

Samsung are only doing monthly security updates for the newest devices. As a Galaxy S5 / S4 owner I can assure you that they can't be bothered. I'm sure once the S6 /S7 hit 2 years old the updates will magically cease. Enjoy it while it lasts!

Unlikely I'll get marshmallow. No chance I'll get nougat.

I ran DP5 on my Nexus 5x, battery life was worse and it seemed to use more memory as I had launcher reviews. I am hoping the final release has improved performance.

A wise woman* - this is the smart option, at worst you get slated for offending the righteous, but on the other hand you don't have to pick a side, which given 50-50 odds, is 99% guaranteed to be the wrong one, a bit like a USB cable only plugging in properly the third way up that you try.

* One side of my grandparentage would but the other side thought it common!

No need to root to flash a factory image, one of the major advantages of owning a Nexus in my opinion

Shows a major flaw in the OS. Especially when you look at how governments and banks are pushing people to use their phones for more and more online stuff like banking, possibly even medical stuff and who knows possibly even voting in the future. I've never used my phone for online banking, I don't consider any Android phone secure enough to trust.

Yet most Android phones are full of security holes and unlikely to ever be patched.

One reason why Windows phones could hold a card here, I must admit getting fed up buying a new Android phone only to find that it never receives any security updates.

Android Nougat 7.0 has indeed begun rolling out. However if you own a Nexus 5 (2013) or the tablet Nexus 7 (2013) you can forget it cos its not going to happen, as google have terminated support less than 3 years since they were released. It was still on sale until March 2015 so some people may rightly feel coned. Once again Apple prove to have the best support.

It's been 2yrs and 9 months since release, so not too shabby. Overall there lives they've gone from 4.4>5.0>5.1>6.0, two major updates in the form of Lollipop and Marshmallow.
Anyone who bought it in March 2015 was still likely to have got two updates, 5.1 and 6.0.

If you're referring to a newly popular image format, it's gif, not gif.

Still? Sheesh.

The My Vodafone app still doesn't work either.

And these companies have had most of the year to get up to speed.

It's very unlikely Nougat will be available on the S5. Samsung pretty much kill support 2 years after release and the phone is over 2 years old.

Google look like they will be doing Quarterly updates from now on. The networks and OEM's are not going to like that they can barley keep up with annual updates

We’re moving Nougat into a new regular maintenance schedule over the coming quarters. In fact, we’ve already started work on the first Nougat maintenance release that will bring continued refinements and polish, and we’re planning to bring that to you this fall as a developer preview. Stay tuned!

Yes, enabling root and unlocking of the bootloader allows the installation of custom roms, or in your case vanilla android. Though this would have to be created by rom makers, you can't flash a Nexus based image on a Samsung phone.
