My favourite character now that Kylie is gone Gemma really does remind me of Kylie in some ways, does anyone else think it too?

Obviously with her being Kylie's friend they are gonna be alike but it seems like they're now modelling Gemma to be the next Kylie

Wants to better herself
Witty (but while Kylie was also witty, she always got big stories, Gemma's more of a comedy character)
Probably quite vulnerable, maybe no confidence?

There is nothing lovable about Gemma. She is just a loud, idiotic, chav. And what a joke if she wins the good Samaritan award.

No, Kylie was never a complete imbecile, plus the actresses behind Kylie and Becky could act.

Gemma will never be like Kylie or Becky, they were endearing and vulnerable, plus they had volume control with their voices. The only thing I root for with Gemma is that she gets hit by the next car that enters the street. Even Ally from Emmerdale was more likeable than her, I honestly don't understand why so many people think she's a 'comedy character' but hey ho, that's varied opinions for you. I think she belongs in a show like Little Britain or the Catherine Tate Show rather than Corrie.

That is what they are trying to mould her as just as Kylie was the new Becky. I have warned to Gemma somewhat and having seen pictures and read interviews of the actress I believe she is a good actress playing the part of Gemma as she comes across in those as nothing like her. However I still don't think of her as a character on the same level as either Kylie or Becky in my personal view, they just seems to have more substance about them or maybe it's just the format seems to be wearing a bit thin.

They way she carries on puts me in mind of a young Vera Duckworth to be honest.

Gemma can be a bit much but she's lively and generally quite funny. Kylie wasn't a big enough character to warrant replacing anyway. She's gone and good riddance. She wasn't very popular.

She does but, to be fair, quite a few of the Corrie characters would not be out of place in Little Britain or The Catherine Tate Show.

Gemma is more akin to a rough council estate female Kirk than she is Kylie to me, maybe with a little bit of early Fiz thrown in for good measure!!

As unlikeable as Kylie was at the beginning she was always smart, savvy, sharp & quick witted!!
Gemma is very childlike, slow witted & easily led, though probably in her own way more easy to feel sympathy for than early Kylie, who became accessible only after she got with David!!

If, as has been suggested by certain DS posters, they ever choose to get Gemma & David together as a couple I really don't know ifi could bear to watch!!

You don't have to be like someone to be friends with them, I'm a case in point. I'm nothing like some of my friends but we are very good friends.

Becky in particular was never endearing or vulnerable, while he actress who played Kylie did vulnerable very well.

Just to clear this up I love both characters

Everyone on here knows how much I loved Kylie, she can never be replaced in my eyes, best soap character ever, sexiest soap character ever I still can't believe she was killed off! Paula, come back as a ghost or something. Or as star said the other week, make David wake up one morning and realise her stabbing was just a nightmare he had and she's lying in bed next to him still alive

But Gemma is great too, and as I said earlier in the thread I think she's the closest they're gonna get to another Kylie. Of course with Kylie now dead I have to have a new favourite character and it's Gemma, hands down

As for her voice, I do think Gemma actress Dolly Rose Campbell does probably put her voice on a bit Gemmas meant to be a gobby chav, I think that's why she talks so loud. Her voice makes me laugh tbh!

But I've noticed that characters similar to each other only have a lifespan of about 6 yrs in the show: (I dunno if this is a coincidence or not tho)

Kylie's sister Becky lasted from 2006-2012
Tina lasted from 2008-2014
Kylie lasted from 2010-2016

Kylie wasn't a big enough character are you kidding me?! Ok albiex you never liked Kylie fair enough that's your opinion but how the hell can you think she wasn't a big character? Not only was she part of the Platts (the show's main family) but in 2013, she became one of the shows leading ladies (along with Leanne and Carla and Tina became REALLY overused) Ky always seemed to get dramatic stories

I will say tho, especially on this forum, Kylie wasn't very popular at all (I think me and maybe 5 others loved her on here) and I dunno if she has a massive fanbase outside this forum but since ppl were devastated she was killed off (it said she was trending on twitter) I think she was quite popular. As an actress Paula Lane was severely underrated. She was the best actress in soap but constantly gets overlooked at soap awards. She always gets beaten by Lacey Turner if Paula doesn't clean up at the soap awards this time, there really is something wrong

Back to characters, one of the most popular character fanbases I never got was Carla. She has a MASSIVE fanbase which I don't get cos she was a terrible character and I personally think there were better actresses in the show (such as Paula, Tina O Brien, Jane Danson, etc.)

I agree about Carla, when I first joined the forum it was full of posters saying stuff like "no wonder she gets all the storylines, she's the only decent character/actress on the show" & It used to annoy the crap out of me!! She was ok as both character & actress but she REALLY wasn't THAT good!!
Kylie to me was always a good character but became a great character when her & David hooked up!! Probably one of the most unlikely pairings in Corrie history to be so good together but it just worked from day one!!
The jury's still out on Gemma with me yet to be honest!! Sometimes I think 'yeah' & other times I just cringe!! Do like her friendship with Ches!! Another surprising mix that works!!

The Platts are not the main family. They are relatively new compared to the Barlows who are an original family. Gail didn't appear until 74 and there were no Platts until 1991. Nick and Sarah are Tilsleys although there was some doubt whether Sarah was Brian's or Ian's. (She's Brian's).
Emily has also been there longer (55 years) although she has very little family AFAIK only Spider and Freda.

Paula Lane being a good actress is a matter of opinion, clearly not one held by everyone as you have mentioned her lack of awards, both viewer voted and panel.

I just rewatched Kylie's death (with great difficulty tho) and I just had a sudden thought

Gemma's on the floor, Kylie runs over to Clayton and scuffles with him, while holding a champagne bottle. Why the **** didn't Kylie smash Clayton over the head with the bottle?

It wasn't in the script. There's no way to soften the blow. It wasn't in the script.
