I've just purchased a Samsung Galaxy J5 on Ebay (came with a two pin plug) and the software version is 5.1.1.

How do I update to Marshmallow 6.0.1? Software update says my software is up to date and won't pick up Marshmallow.

My Kies3 software no longer works with the J5, and I am told to download Smartswitch however this doesn't update software.

My phone is on Giff Gaff and I am using a Mac computer.

Please help me.

Sounds like it is a not of UK origin. Samsung are awful at rolling out updates and only started rolling it out in India in June (Marshmallow was released in October 2015) . You will need to find the country of origin and look on Sam Mobile to see where its being updated. Don't hold your breath.....

Go to Settings - About and you will find the model number and other technical information.

The Galaxy A5 2016 has Marshmallow in some countries right now including India I think, but no news about the UK yet.

Samsung has way too many phones to keep track off.

What's the main difference between the A5 and J5 then?

They are completely different phones. The J5 is a budget model, the A5 is mid range.

Alright thanks. I've seen a couple of reviews of both but struggle to see much of a difference, other than one looks like an iPhone knockoff at the back.

Just had an update on my A5 and there is now option of pattern to unlock and the snooze time has options on 5 10 and 15 minutes that was the only thing I missed from iPhone which had one minute snooze 5 minutes was not enough
