I was listening to Grace's "You Don't Own Me" from the Suicide Sqaud soundtrack. It's a great song and this version was absolutely brilliant..until all of a sudden, completely out of nowhere, G-Easy barged in and ruined everything with the most rubbish and pointless rap verse I've ever heard in my life.

His rap was so out of place in the song I was left literally open-mouthed! I felt similar when he popped up in Britney's new song Make Me but it was nowhere near as jarring as his appearance in You Don't Own Me.

I don't hate rap and I don't automatically hate rap featuring in pop songs by default but I feel for years this is nothing but a gimmick to get da yoof on side and is often badly done at best and flat out pointless at worst.

What is the worst example of a rap featuring in a non-rap song? I truly don't think it can get worse than the example of You Don't Own Me but let's see.

Wiz Khalifa's rap in Maroon 5's "Payphone" was a bit out of place for me.

But the worst one is probably Kanye's version in Katy Perry's "E.T". If ever there was a mainstream pop song that didn't need a rap but got one, it's this. Thankfully there's a version without him, and it's a lot, lot better.

I don't know about the most pointless rap but the most pointless rapper has to be G Eazy by far. So awful.

I remember that. At the time it made me feel literal anger. A crime against music if ever there was one.

Another example of pointless rap - Dizzie Rascal in Band Aid 20. Horrid!

He's appalling isn't he? Totally talentless and so intrusive, destroying otherwise good songs. Where did he come from? Seems to have popped up and started working with massive artists over night and out of nowhere.

Good shout. And for those two lines, according to the video, he needed them written down for him whilst he did them.

I think most raps in pop songs are rather pointless. I think it's a bit of a gimmick, this whole rent a rapper thing. The ones I really dislike the most would be:

G-Eazy's rap in Britney's Make Me
Sean Paul's rap in The Saturdays' What About Us
Flo Rida's rap in The Saturdays' Higher
Kanye's rap in Katy Perry's ET

Sean Paul's rap in Cheap Thrills. I suppose some people see him as a novelty but it just doesn't work on this song imo.

Lil Wayne's rap on Ariana Grande's Let Me Love You destroys the song.

Fetty Wap in general. His "voice" is brutal and destroys any song he features on. **shudders**

Alicia Keys' Girl On Fire is such a brilliant song. Why on earth did it get re-released with that shit Nicki Minaj rap in the middle? It even feels like she's taking the piss. I can't remember the lyrics but it's along the lines of "Hi God, I love you God, thank you for this world God".

I usually don't go for the whole rent-a-rapper thing, but I think Flo Rida's intro to Higher is brilliant.

Mr. Rida: What you doing saturday girl?
Saturdays: I'm doing nothing, 'cause then at least I'm doing nothing wrong.

Adds a bit more spice and sass into the mix haha. The Saturdays' line on its own just seems a bit meh after you hear the rap version.

Olly Murs's Troublemaker wins this.

You can clearly hear it was never intended to be in the song and the rap just stop so suddenly you are like, What? It's awful.

REM - The Outsiders. Some rapper called Q-Tip turns up near the end and does his stuff, I hit the skip track button.

I think the most grating thing is when rappers announce themselves instead of just getting on with their rap. What's that all about? It comes across as so arrogant, like they think they are the most important person to ever grace the earth.

Pointless and very annoying is the rap halfway through Beyonce's "Crazy Right Now". A good track ruined by ego.
I don't remember George Martin snatching the microphone out of Paul McCartney's hand with the words "I want to do MY bit now!"

I think there was standup by David Cross that talked about how you don't see this sort of thing in other media.

The bit went something like:

"How was that book you were reading?"

"Pretty good. Although in the middle of the book there was this weird bit where a different author wrote about how great he was and how much money he makes. Then it went right back to the story."

On an REM track..i would skip to Q-tip's part..in fact the only reason i would listen to it would be to hear him, so it cant be that pointless if it could get someone like me to check the song out just because he is on it.
