So pleased this has been released with the telesnaps as well:
"Telesnap reconstruction.
Around 400 individual still frames of film exist from the original 1966 television production of The Power of the Daleks. These images were kept in the programme’s production files by the BBC Written Archive Centre. These images are here combined with the programme’s soundtrack to present a photographic reconstruction of the original programme."

-all the episodes that have been animated with telesnaps available should have been released like this -as an option before you push play
Maybe they will re-release them as Special Editions on Blu-Ray with that very feature.
This is not new for the DVD as it was produced a long time ago for the Power CD-ROM.

may be, or even better:
re-release the stories with existing animation & telesnaps with a split screen option -so you can view both the animation & the telesnap at the same time as listening to the soundtrack -(almost) perfect

I bought the series pass and all episodes are available to view. You just can't download them.

Oops! Look like I spoke too soon. They have removed the viewing facility. I managed to watch the first two episodes though.

I am delighted that they have done this animation. I have seen all of Doctor Who and the 60s era is definitely my favourite by far. Good acting, good stories well told.

I'm quite surprised there hasn't been more discussion about this. I think it's great to have Power of the Daleks back, even if it's only animated. I think the animation is more 'Hannah Barberra' in style than the sophisticated CGI of Disney Pixar. However it kind of fits the mood of the piece.
I have noticed one big continuity error though. In the scene where Ben, Polly and the Doctor meet the Governor for the first time, Ben and Polly are wearing colony clothes before the Governor suggests they wear something more suitable.

I guess most people will be waiting for the DVD or Blu-ray. I certainly will never buy anything from the BBC store so I am 2 weeks off joining in the discussion.

I'd say it was more 'Filmation' (Star Trek: The Animated Series, Space Sentinels, He-Man) in style, rather than Hanna-Barbera.

There is a recon and good looking extras on the DVD. Not too bothered about the animation.

It's actually more captain Pugwash. It just looks... wrong. To be honest, I've listened to the audio of Power so many times now, I kinda feel like I've 'seen' it anyway. For me, watching the animation would ruin it, because that would potentially become how I then picture the story - as a half-arsed animation full of characters who move like shadow puppets with blank dead eyes.

It's not for me, Jen.

Pugwash was paper card moved physically by hand via strings, sticks and pivot-points, so nothing like that at all.
If you mean limited animation with some repetitive mouth movements then my example above was closer.

It's precisely like that. Yes, the method used to create the animation is obviously different, but the movements of the human characters still suffer from the same largely 2-dimensional limitations of Pugwash, Ivor the Engine, Noggin the Nog, etc.

I guess you haven't seen the Filmation stuff from the 1960s and 70s then?

It arrived on dvd this morning!

Im currently watching it and its great!

The ending of episode 4 was fantastic!

Very pleased with it. The picture looks good; the sound is crystal clear and theres lots of little nuances in the movements-even the dalek eye-stalks wobbling as they come down the capsule ramp is there.
The whole look of it is just great.

I don't know if you can get this on iPlayer (or maybe find it on YT) but on BBC North East TV's Look North local news programme last night, they had a segment where they talked to the guy who did the animation for this Power release.

Apparently he's from sunderland (poor guy ) and he was talking about how he did it and came to do it, they showed him working on it in his home studio (Daleks and sonic screwdrivers aplenty litter it!) and showed some of the scenes.

I'm going to watch the DVD tomorrow on the programme's 53rd Birthday. I know how great the story is having 'watched' it along with a number of Loose Cannon recons this year (not in order; just finished The Dalek Masterplan; brilliant! And that includes the funny Christmas episode!) so it'll be a treat to see it in this format.

It's amazing to see it, even if some of the animation is kind of Saturday-morning style. It's strange, the Daleks are obviously animated in a 3D app, but the characters are put together as digital cut-outs. Odd melding.

The wife and I watched episode 1 last night. The story is enjoyable but the animation is, well, primitive compared to the animation they've done for Troughton's other missing stories (we watched a bit of The Invasion just to compare). It's lacking in framerate, the motion is almost marionette-like and I think the most annoying thing is when the characters aren't talking they just stand there, making little herky-jerky movements back and forth. Real people don't do that! Reminds me of some rather bad Canadian animation in recent years.

I'm kind of surprised they didn't retcon the Doctor's heartbeat to four beats. They added a smile in the Hartnell reflection that didn't happen in the original broadcast!

Only flicked through the dvd but not impressed at all by the animation. The characters moved unnaturally. Jerky movements. The recon however looks quite good, much better than the underwater menace. Also.the audio is the same as the cd release which has the anneke wells narration on. Some extras to watch too. So first impressions are good dvd but poor animation.

Would be interesting to know how this is selling now it has been released in the UK. As others have said, good sales may lead to further missing episode animations
