anti-cat spikes
for years I've lived in the same house and watched cats walk along the back fences causing no problems at all. But.....a neighbour has put anti-cat spikes on the fence that separates our back gardens and now they jump into my garden, spray and then jump up on the side fence.
I love cats, I've got one of my own but these spikes are awful, it's 3 rows of solid plastic spikes which must hurt - google anti-cat spikes and you will see what I mean. The dark nights are coming so as there's some greenery over the fence many cats are not going to see them until it's too late. Im not going to try and reason with the neighbours - you cant reason with unreasonable people but has anyone else had any experience of this. I've desperately been looking for my deeds to see who owns the fence, spoke to an idiot at the council but they were useless. As a last resort i'm going to build another fence infront of the offending one or possibly get a joiner to build a wooden frame so cats can just walk along that instead. Any advice

The cats will know where they are and avoid them, they learn their territory. My garden Is now cat proofed as I have indoor cats, ever since not one of the neighbourhood cats has climbed on my fence or tried to jump in my garden.
The braver of the cats will probably walk along the spikes very carefully should they want to...but they don't need to, they don't have to have access to your neighbours garden |

OP are you sure it is a joint fence? Usually you can tell by the posts as they are supposed to be on the side of the property the fence belongs to.
Maybe the person put them up because cats were jumping down and littering or killing garden birds or maybe they have a pet rabbit. I would really try to have a chat with them before building a secondary structure so that cats can still patrol. Neighbour disputes can be hell - even if you have right on your side. Anyway I googled these 'spikes' and there is a lot of online discussion about them. It appears they are designed to deter not maim. and that the RSPCA is OK about them. I actually came across a cat owner who had fitted some. Frankly if I was you I would be tempted to fit some of my own - maybe just where your side fence meets the back fence. |

nope - i'm going to have a higher fence build directly infront of the one already there w - and plant bushes that will pee him off as it will shade his garden.

Littering? Do they come and drop crisp packets in your garden or are you on about crapping everywhere?

I don't like these spikes at all, however I have sympathy with your neighbour. I had to pick up 10 separate piles of cat poo from my garden today We don't have cats (or any pets).
I am a reasonable person who is fed up doing this chore on too regular a basis. |

Don't see the problem
. If your neighbour has felt the need to put (perfectly legal) spikes up on the wall they are probably fed up of someone's cat crapping all over their garden, scaring off birds or just point blank don't want it on their property!

Anti-cat spikes, anti-homeless people spikes and I see alot of anti-skateboarding obstacles on low walls outside buildings too.
The world is turning into a hateful and oppressive environment, lacking in any tolerance of senses of fun. I hope every tom cat in the area does a dump on your neighbours front door step. |

Anti cat spikes are better for the cats than poisoned meat or an air rifle pellet in the head. The OP is being unreasonable.

What then if everyone takes this selfish action and every flippin' boundry wall and fence in the country has solid plastic spikes ? Good news for Vets and Doctors treating punctures wounds on cats' and kids' feet.
Like I said above, we now have spike, metal brackets and studs all over our building and walls to stop homeless people, skateboarding harmless kids and now cats, hardly a big threat ? |

the thing is it is not just his fence it is mine also and it is causing the cats to stop in their tracks and then jump into my garden which I don't want. I don't see the problem with cats walking along a row of fences that cover 20 properties?
I Hello, Pot calling kettle, colour check!! I see nothing wrong with what the neighbour has done, you only object because you would love to do the same, prevent cats from jumping into your garden. Also it probably is your cat that he's trying to prevent from shitting in his garden! |

yes, I have used them!
are they cruel - no do they hurt the cat - no are they vicious - no do they stop the cats - most of them! my garden was a communal cat toilet when I moved in and I put the spikes along the back fence there is NOTHING worse than cleaning up other peoples cat poop and believe me, there was lots! yes, I have my own cat but she wasnt allowed outside as I had just moved in and even when she did eventually go outside, I didnt take them down straight away they are down now as no cats come into my garden anymore but if they did, I wouldnt hesitate to put them back up and yes, my cat poops in my garden - how do I know - because she is regular as clockwork ![]() ![]() FYI they DONT put puncture wounds on cats feet - what a ridiculous thing to post! oh and some cats are not bothered by them at all and just continue walking across my fence - gingerly and slowly - but they do it - my cat being one of those cats! they are not designed to maim or hurt or puncture the cat - just to deter them and that is just what they do |

Are they rubber spikes then, not plastic ?
Ok update, I just saw a picture on an amazon review showing a black and white cat walking up and down these spikes because the owner said it gave him a paw massage, quite funny. But I also see other anti-cat spike designs online that are made from wire and look lethal. Society can't keep everything and everybody out, that is the route to gated-community security state. |
