Eastenders- block storyline and pointless returns
Has anyone found the past 3 weeks of eastenders ridiciculous in terms of block storylines and the returns of Grant , Courtney and mark ? Grants return has been hyped up all summer and while we know he is coming back I fail to see the point in the scenes he was in at all or the introduction of mark or Courtney for 5 scenes explore there link with grant then disappear off screen?
If both characters are just cheap plot devices I think will be a real shame as eastenders is lacking younger characters at the moment minus Abbie and Whitney who are tedious Courtney could be a good addition and mark although we know nothing about him yet Any thoughts? |

Cant see an end to block storytelling. Its the cheapest and most efficient use of the cast and staff time.
People keep deluding themselves that EE isn't suffering due to cutbacks. This is just one part in why the show is impossible to save. SOC won't do anything different, if anything him getting the job makes sense. He's been used to producing a show, the archers, which is cheap to make and it seems like its a last chance to try and salvage the show by being more creative with what limited things he has at his disposal. |

It always seems to happen though a character is coming back its all hyped up everyone is looking forward to it, they come back 5 episodes then go for ages again and wer still waiting, Courtney has disappeared, and Marks hardly been in it and from what I hear isn't going to be in it much presumably when Grant returns (whenever that is roll eyes) Its a Joke.

Grant comes back for a few episodes then buggers off, what is the point of introducing Grant's kids back into the cast if it won't have any proper long term affect.
Isn't Michelle not going to want her son back? Same with Louise, Lisa dgaf that her daughter just up and left. It would be better if Michelle came over to try and get Mark to return then the whole 'Grant is your dad' comes out. The block storytelling is not good. |

The block storylining is a pain in the arse, that is true.
I do like the pointless returns though. It feels more authentic - people do visit their friends and family sometimes without it needing to be a big drama or call for a whole standalone storyline. It's nice to just quickly catch up with past characters and then wave them off sometimes. I like Libby's little visits for instance. I find the character too dull for a permanent return, but it's nice to know that at least one of Denise's daughter's hasn't completely forgotten her. The only thing making it unrealistic is that it took Libby years to get to the point of popping in to see her mum, since she then went on to do it fairly regularly

It's starting a story, running it for a few episodes and then pausing it without another mention to concentrate on other stories / characters for a few episodes, rather than weaving all the stories across adjacent episodes. It just makes things hard to follow as you forget some of the nuances whilst the story is off the screen and seemingly on hold. It's always happened to an extent but it's become more obvious and more prevalent in recent years.

It was especially evident with Ronnie in 2014. She returned in March but was absent from May until most of June, where she then made an appearance for one episode only for her to leave
