Why does X Factor treats certain talented finalists as cannon fodder?

I'm talking about people like Treyc Cohen (S7) or Sophie Habibis (S8). We saw 5 seconds of their audition, then 8-9 seconds of Bootcamp performance, maybe a 30 second clip of their Judges Houses' performance and then... guess what, this contestant we barely showed you is in the live shows!!!!!

Ohh and not to mention they were picked instead of early favourites like Gamu (S7) or Jade (S8). Basically, all things that summed up made them look like they shouldn't be in the live shows. Then... they have a good first live show. Of course TPTB don't like it so... let's give them horrible song choices so they end up at 9th or 10th place. Yaaaaay!

Seriously, I highlighted these two but I can't understand what's the point of treating good singers as cannon fodder. They weren't even given a chance.

There have been a number of threads over the years on how the show pre-determines the finishing order of the contestants.

I see the finalists as split into 3 distinct groups. Positions 9-12 are fodder; 5-8 are the tour acts who won't get signed; the top four are the ones Syco will look to sign with the winner being the "star".

To make it easier for the show to get rid of the fodder, they tend to give them little airtime so that the audience don't build up a relationship with them & they don't build up a fanbase.

This is how I see it as well. Plus there is the 'bootcamp fodder' as well, who I feel a bit sorry for. Most of them seem to have no idea they are just there to make up numbers.

I agree with you entirely, they turned Treyc into a Tina Turner tribute act, and Sophie Habibis had to make do with some horrible song choices.

They also did the same to Aiden and Janet in those years too, and I felt that Kitty could've been a decent Rock singer but was instead just being made to be weird for the sake of it sometimes.

I agree they will have certain 'chosen ones' that they will help as far as possible - including using deadlock to their advantage, so they keep surviving.

But the part they can't control is the public. Occasionally some acts will take them by surprise, catch the public's support and go further than expected. Same Difference, Leon Jackson, The McDonalds and Chris Maloney are four that come to mind. None were in a sing off
