I've got a 10.1 Note (GT-N8010) tablet and the LCD cable slot is damaged. It's where the ribbon cable rests.

Is it possible to repair it or have I buggered it completely?

It would help if you gave some more detail about what is actually broken.

If you have managed to ping out or break the locking bar then that may be replaceable. You would have to be very ham fisted to break the socket on the main board. It would be relatively easy to damage the plastic ribbon cable that connects to the display. Especially if you try to disconnect/connect it with the locking bar in the down position.

But unless you describe in more detail or can upload some photos of the damage it is impossible to say if it is an easy fix or whether you will need to replace the main board or display panel.

Were you replacing the screen?

Those hinged locking bar things are very fragile.

If the bar has broken or been lost then it might be possible to jam in a thin piece of plastic over the cable, that might be enough to force a contact with the cable and the contacts.

I have never tried it but often wondered if it would work.

The plastic should be the thickness of a piece of paper, quite thin really.
Also it needs to be exactly the same width as the tongue of the cable so that all the contacts are pushed down.


Then fold back the sticky tape to hold everything in place, or apply some new tape if the old piece has been lost.

As you can see, the left side seems to have some parts faded away. Would I need a new cable altogether or would that current one still suffice?

No. the screen's fine. It's just that the LCD cable was rather 'wobbly' and that made the output rather colourful shall we say. It looked something like this:

The socket is broken, obviously . So even if the cable is OK I doubt it will stay in the socket. You might get lucky and find there is enough of the locking mechanism intact to hold the cable in place and with a bit of tape you can get the cable to make contact with the terminals of the socket. But I doubt it will be very secure.

Ideally the socket needs changing, though I suspect that may be easier said than done. You may find if you take it round a few repair shops that they suggest a total replacement of the board it sits on as that is likely easier than trying to unsolder the old one and solder in a new one.

And there is also the possibility that if the cable was ripped from the socket it could have damaged the contacts so need replacing as well.

I foresee a not very cheap repair job unfortunately.

Thanks Chris. And it's a bit sad that the cost will probably be the same as what the tablet's worth now.

A shame really since everything else works apart from the problem I highlighted. Maybe I can flog it for spares on ebay or something.
