EE - where's the real Walford?
I’m Danish, and a huge EE fan, go to London several times a year, and always spend one of the days up Borehamwood, so have met a lot of the cast over the years.
Anyway, I know what the Eastend generally looks like – well, Tower Hamlets etc. – but is there anywhere in the real Eastend which still resembles Walford / Albert Sq, same demographics etc, i.e. still mainly Brits/cockneys – so I could go there next time I come over, and when I get there, I’ll feel like I walk around in Walford. I know Albert Sq is based on Fassett Sq in Hackney, but when you search it on google maps, it’s a residential area – no market, shops etc. So where should I go next time I’m in London? or - do I have to go to some obscure place in Essex ? |

You have to get the tube from platform 9 3/4 between Angel and Islington.

If you want the East end 'market feel' with cafe's and a couple of pubs around, try wandering around Petticoat Lane market on Wentworth / Middlesex Street. Dead close to the city.
There are a lot of 'square' type developments around Victoria Park village. It's hard to find somewhere demographically similar as Eastenders doesn't come close to reflecting reality, but the area around Vicky park wouldn't be far off I guess. |

Walford East tube station replaces Bromley-by-Bow on tube map, but I don't know what Browley-by-Bow is actually like and how representative it is of the EastEnders version of the 'East End'?

I used to live in Bromley by Bow it's a dump. Roman Road market has a similar vibe (well it did). Or even crisp street market in poplar.

I used to live in Bethnal Green, which is in the heart of the East End and kind of looks like Walford.
When walking along the Regent's Canal by Victoria Park I used to imagine that was where Den was shot

Isn't Walford supposed to be in between WALthamsow and StratFORD, Hence Walford?

It's near West Ham and they all pretend to be West Ham supporters.

sad news - no "real" walford. So ... when did it "dissappear" ? there must have been an area like that when they started in 1985
I've only watched it since 2001 - but I'm a huge fan, and I do remember I read somewhere, not a clue where or when - OK; online probably - but it was something about the real Eastend market traders sort of copying the Walford market traders, e.g. forever going to the cafe for a cuppa |

OMG OMG need me' head looked at - sometimes when I've been to "Walford" - there was a market on Henley Rd - starting at the Superdrug (now closed) on the corner of Clarendon Rd and Henley Rd .... seemed a bit like the one in "Walford" - it's hasn't been there every time I've been - so perhaps they only have it a couple of times a week
