Shampoo and Conditioner recommendations for VERY damaged hair
Hi there, my poor hair is in need of lots of TLC due to over-straightening and colouring. I keep trying different shop-bought shampoos and conditioners to help but haven't found anything that noticeably has improved the condition of my hair. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good shampoo and conditioner to strengthen my damaged hair? Thanks in advance!

Coconut oil treatments...but shampoos and conditioners depends on your hair. Mine is awful with most but seems to like Aussie hair care

Try going to Poundstretcher, Savers, Poundland, etc, and look for Argan Oil shampoo, conditioner and hair mask. The hair mask is the important one.
Many shampoos advertise themselves as containing argan oil, but this is an actual brand called Argan Oil and comes in brown tubes and pots. Use the shampoo as normal. Then leave the hair mask in for as long as you can, or until your hair dries out naturally. Then rinse it out in water as cold as you are comfortable with before putting the conditioner in. After that, you can also add Aldi's "Miraculous leave-in conditioning spray" into damp hair before styling or blow drying. If your hair doesn't feel amazing after all that, it must be really damaged and you'll just have to grow it out. Oz Botanics is another good £1 brand, and like Argan Oil products, they often do special offers with 50% or even 100% extra free, so look out for those. |

Most of the aforementioned are all good for moisture replenishment but the OP needs a PROTEIN treatment to strengthen the hair and to ensure it doesn't break so easily when she styles it and just generally to protect her hair from the elements.
Use any moisture shampoo; but it's the treatment that you need to focus on. I would recommend the following:- Joico K-Pak Reconstructor Nexxus Emergencee (expensive but excellent) Aphogee Keratin 2 Minute Reconstructor Aveda Damage Remedy Reconstructor Don't leave a reconstructor on overnight; leave it on for the amount of time that it says on the bottle. Personally I use Moroccanoil reconstructive mask, but that is very expensive and I would only recommend it for someone who's hair isn't that damaged; more as a maintenance tool. If you decide not to use these look for a treatment that uses words such as "reconstructor," or "repair" etc as these will have the strengtheners within them that you need. Don't use anymore than once a week and only until your hair feels stronger then switch back to your normal conditioner. When you go back to your normal routine/conditioner include natural oils like coconut oil and argan. I would suggest you leave this on overnight and wash it out in the morning. If your hair is weak give the heated tools a rest; these will only make your hair weaker and cause it to break off. It's a good idea to use a protein treatment every 6- 8 weeks especially if you chemically treat your hair or heat style it regularly Start from a blank canvas. Give your ends a good trim then start this process; you will see the difference very quickly if you keep it up. |

I've got highlighted hair that gets washed, blow dried and straightened every day and I use kerastase resistance (the green range) which keeps my hair on the right side of straw.

Every time before washing, almond oil in your hands and on fingers, massage into scalp, preferably while head turned upside down (but not neccessary), for as long as you can stand it. When shampooing, massage scalp too, NO conditioner, NEVER.
Edit: And no treatments. You need proteins (including gelatine, no vegetarian shit) in your diet, and a scalp massage every other day, for healthy hair. |

Why no conditioner?
If the OP said she has thin lifeless hair with no volume I could slightly understand the 'no conditioner' advice. |

I love the Bamboo specialist range of hair care products. Specifically for colour treated hair they give great shine and condition to damaged hair.

Thank you for this very comprehensive advice Lushness. I've just bought the Joico K-Pak Reconstructor. Could you just clarify for me that the process is...shampoo, towel dry, put on the Joico, rinse after 5 minutes, then do you condition? Or just leave it at that after rinsing it off?

It's up to you, you could condition using a moisture treatment or just finish with Joico. I always follow a protein conditioner with a moisture one because my hair is dry and I need as much moisture in my hair as possible.

John Frieda's Miracle Mask is the most I have to put on mine to make it soft and manageable and I have put it through some serious crap including switching back and forth between bleach and colour, bleaching it three times in a week three different shades of blonde, spraying it through with a can of sun in style blonde spray, spraying a whole can of extra hold spray on it to try and get curls to stay out, overdoing it on blonde shampoo that had the same stuff as the spray in it, repeated dyeing in various reds, bleaching it again last year twice in two weeks and now my supposed brown colour has gone almost black so I'm throwing everything at it to try and fade it. I also straighten it almost daily because my hair is so thick I look like Crystal Tipps if I don't
. I have never had a treatment on it and as I can't be bothered with products all I use is whatever shampoo/conditioner is on offer or in Aldi's, some heat defence spray when I remember to buy some and a small blob of JF's miracle mask if it feels like it needs a bit of help. Works wonders .

Works wonders .What you have to remember is that everyone's hair is different. What abuse your hair can tolerate someone else will not. You're fortunate that you can use anything on your hair and get away with soft, manageable hair. Some people's hair is fragile and need a lot more support and care. I couldn't straighten my hair daily as it would just break off and I would lose the length of my hair that has taken me years to grow. My hair is soft, shiny and looks very healthy and people regularly stop me to ask what I use; its just simply a lot of consistent effort for me but worth it. Quote:
Fabulous! Then I shall definitely do the same. I'm trying to grow it long so after lopping off all the split ends I need to get it into tip top condition. Thanks again!

Well, I've used the Joico K Pak once. I am stunned. Just stunned.
I left it in for 5 minutes, holding the dry ends tightly to drive it in. Very thin consistency so wasn't really hopeful but boy, when the time came to rinse it out it was like spun silk! I had no idea hair could change like that! When it was drying it kinda looked like it normally did but when it was being styled it it felt heavier (this is a good thing) and the shine and condition was unparalleled. Lushness, you are my new hair goddess! Thank you for your advice! |

Use it for a couple of weeks (no more than once a week) until your hair feels stronger then switch to your normal conditioner. Perhaps use the K Pak every four weeks or something to keep your hair strong. This way the tube will last for ages also. I need to buy some myself as I've run out. |

If your hair is in such bad condition, the only way to get it back healthy again is to get it cut well and start again without the hair straighteners etc. You may find you have a build up of product on your hair, this will make it dull. Try washing it with Fairy Liquid to remove the build up, then get it cut and you will see a big difference.

Lmao if you're going to use Fairy to clarify your hair you'd better make sure that sh*t is diluted as hell and I mean practically water. There are so much surfactants in washing up liquid, that it will suck every bit of hydration out of your hair. Unless your hair is some sort of oil slick it will only result in crispy dry ends and as for the scalp...umm no.
If you want to clarify your hair for pennies use an apple, cider vinegar rinse but only a small amount of vinegar. It's much more effective than the stuff you use to wash plates. |
