I quite liked it - it was nicely daft. It did seem to have been cut to ribbons though, as if it was a two hour pilot squeezed into an hour.

I see that most here are not fans of Nigella week, but I really enjoyed it. She seemed very much at home doing it, even taking over some of the hosting duties. The challenges were simpler than usual, but that's her style. And she provided this memorable exchange with Con: Quote:
Love how she just said that wouldn't work Con what are you going to do instead?!

I'd love one of them one day to say, actually, I'm ready to go home, I've had enough.

I've been looking forward to when you got up to this scene since the start of the series. Con was happy. His cake was in the oven and it was all going well, but 15 seconds after Nigella showed up he was in deep trouble if he didn't start again. She was so casual saying "So, what's the plan? What will you make instead?"
I won't miss Con but also like a few others, I was wondering why no-one was touching the Battenberg. Do Aussies not like a bit of Battenberg? It was the most obvious one there. Also the swiss roll, I would've called that a jam roly poly, would I have been wrong or is that another name for the same thing? |

Considering people have been annoyed with Gary in particular this series telling cooks to get a second plan I am interested in everyone's thoughts on this. Nigella was right and the cake was nowhere near baked. The plan was flawed and she knew it so quickly told him he had to think of something else or essentially he was praying for one of the other two to screw up spectacularly.

It is odd about the Battenberg - surely one of the most distinctive cakes in the Western world!? Or maybe it's gone out of fashion. |

Ha ha Nigella's "thanks for feeding me" with the subtext being "even if two of the cakes were crappy".
I'm always interested what they do with all the spare food from this kind of challenge (the first round). An absolute ****tonne of cakes that everybody takes a tiny nibble out of. Do they just tell the production team to go ape? |

Oh I'm glad it's the end of Nigella week. She is soooo smug and sooo aware of the cameras with her pursed lips. Also she really shouldn't try to stuff so much into her mouth with a camera on her gob! I'm sorry Con has gone but I like Charlie and Matt too.

Clearly not - `I was also screaming Battenberg at the TV.
![]() With regard "what would you do if you'd been told you need a plan B?" I have a very quick chocolate fudge cake recipe that I can make in 40mins, from start to finish...I would have whipped that up, started making a chocolate fudge buttercream and some raspberry coulis and that would have been it, or there's always the trusty Victoria Sponge, which can be baked in 25-mins in a 160 fan oven! There are always options, he just happened to bake a big cake in a big pan and it needed a low heat, unfortunately. I don't mind Nigella, but I don't think that she's of the same standard as the chefs that they have on the show, she's a home cook who had a VERY lucky break. There are lots of people who can prepare food as well as she can, she really is a home cook. I personally think that this part of the competition should have been earlier - the challenges she gave weren't hard, and had people like Karmen, Cecilia and Chloe been in the cake-off it would have been incredibly difficult to decide the winner because cakes are "their thing" (it annoys me that they are all self-proclaimed dessert queens, but there is no denying they can at least bake) and having a good recipe in the memory bank can make all the difference! |

Looking up the history of the Battenburg it's very English, apparently created for the wedding of one of Queen Victoria's granddaughters to the Prince of Battenburg. They don't seem to have it (commonly) in the US either. Don't like it (used to rip it apart and eat just a few of the sponge pieces when I was a child as I didn't like the jam used, nor the marzipan).

I agree with about Nigella, I think what I enjoy is that she just enjoys food. Not on a James Martin "stick a butter mountain I there" but prett damn close and she doesn't typically 'chef-up' the finished article. Meanwhile my hangover and I are getting along a little better - I impressed myself with knowing what a Simnal cake was... |

Re: cake - I am sure it'll take 40 mins to find out where you are and you know just helicopter in, so I think that gives you just the right amount of time to get that ready in time for us to have a cuppa. THAT SOUNDS DELICIOUSSSSSS!!!!!!

Ahh, it's 40 mins if you don't have to go to the shops to buy ingredients - which they don't! I always have flour and cocoa and chocolate in the house (bad girl) but have to restock with eggs and butter/Stork as they don't keep so well... |

Not everyone does know what a Simnal cake is - it's something that is becoming rarer as less and less people bake especially for Easter. I was quite chuffed I knew what a Moon Cake was (but I have a few Chinese friends on FB and they go all out for their Autumnal festival thing, and one particular friend is always so happy when her local bakery starts making them that she posts loads of pictures).

Theresa is 45?! She looks amazing!
I'm re-watching some of series 6, which I didn't comment on much here as i watched it in Aus time. Features my number one most annoying contestant of all time - Emelia (even the spelling is rank, sorry anyone with that name). Remember when they conveniently raised money for the charity that helped her when she was in a car crash. I'm equal opportunities - didn't make me like her any more. Wow she was so smug and arrogant, completely ruined what was otherwise a really good series, because for some reason MC wanted to champion her and seemed to think we would like her horrendous attitude. As for Emelia. Maybe the crash did something to her and she hasn't always had an attitude. I kind of liked her at times, but also found her to be a bit too up herself on more than a few occasions. She did however provide one of the most memorable moments on the show when she stuck her tongue out at George and he reciprocated. That was pure class on his front! ![]() I am thoroughly enjoying this season, but think they are pushing them too hard. Between doing a Shannon Bennett dish in the audition round, a catering challenge where they had to feed a couple of thousand people and only getting an hour to prepare and cook a three course meal. I don't usually criticize the show, but those things were a bit too much. Also think that Nigella has been completely over-hyped. She didn't really bring anything of substance to her week and even her masterclass courses were easy recipes. Even Matt could have done them with his eyes closed. I think she seemed to be genuinely nice, but came over as awkward when she tried to come up with 'words of wisdom' on the spot. Maybe she's better with a script/autocue. I would much rather have had a Maggie Beers week. She is lovely and is a more advanced and competent cook than Nigella. Hopefully they'll have her on this season. I am also sorry that Con is gone and was really hoping the judges wouldn't eliminate anyone (which is what they have done when faced with eliminating really good cooks). Hopefully he will have great success with his cafe. |

I was talking with my mum this afternoon and she said "seriously, a Vic sponge takes 25 minutes to bake in the oven, and about 10 to mix...he could EASILY have made one, but instead he makes a pound cake and continues to make it even though he's been told it won't be cooked in time...he deserved to go for that alone." |
