I found it odd that Shannon was the chef in this episode, depriving the pirate of him as a mentor. My guess is that their guest chef didn't show up, forcing them to switch to plan B.

Elise did a dessert!!!
<Girls dance> <Boys cheer> <Marching band oompah-pahs its way past> ...hang on, she always does desserts. <Crowds disperse, marching band slopes off quietly> You've got to hand it to Brett, though. He's definitely stepped it up a gear. I thought his tactics in the first part of the elimination were impressive. It's hard to tell from the editing whether the contestants usually get much thinking time between the challenge being announced and the challenge actually starting, but whether they did or not he gave himself that extra 40 minutes to think about what he needed to do and plan it all out. When his time started I thought he would be rushing around like a mad thing to get everything done, but he ambled over quite casually to get a saucepan...didn't need to rush as he'd already figured it all out. |

Shannon 18, Brett 17, according to an internet source (it's been months since I saw the ep.). I don't have the breakdown but 9 & 9 and 9 & 8 seems likely.

that felt a bit weird for the immunity challenge tonight
i assume shannon must have known in advance he was cooking and with a completely free choice would have planned in advance what he was going to do |

There is no way that they could not have known who cooked those dishes. Brett hasn't shown the skills necessary to deliver a foam like that (even with the collapse) or the experience to put together the side elements.
Not sure how you could get round it - but it wasn't a true blind test. I'm glad Brett didn't win. His tactics of only having the 20 minutes were interesting. More thinking time maybe? But it does seem sometimes from shows like these, you can make a decent dish with just a few ingredients and limited time. I forgot (because I do other things at 7pm on a Wednesday and record / +1) this was on at 7pm. oops! |

Thanks guys. I actually liked Shannon doing the cook off. He comes across really well in his VT chats, I don't actually think he rushed at all? He seemed very calm and collected all the way thru. Best mentor they have had on MCA by a million miles! ( can you tell I'm a fan?!

I think *whispers* the Pirate is actually cooking well at the moment. He played the first challenge perfectly. He had a good protein and a good root vegetable. Do something simple but well and you'll often win. |

That is exactly how I guessed it went down. Guest chef was ill/unavailable on the morning of filming so they went with Shannon as he was already in situ.

You see, I had a completely different take on it - figured Shannon was the guest chef as it was "Most Difficult Week" and what could be more difficult than an accomplished chef who know his way round the MCA kitchen? He has been the best mentor by a million miles and I guess that's why he was with The Pirate at the end of the allotted time
And whilst the aforesaid Pirate is cooking well, it was basically 2 meals of protein, purée and pickles that he served up during the episode (parfait would have completed the alliteration perfectly!) I'm on such a downer about him, I can't even imagine that he's an actual contender ![]() Team challenge tonight? |

I'm glad Shannon cooked last night. As nice as it is to see guest chefs, it was also nice to see the mentor cook off as well.

I suspect that there'll be a limit to how long he'll be able to get away with that, however well he does it, before they start wanting him to be more adventurous and take more risks. MasterChef isn't usually a 'slow and steady wins the race' sort of competition.
Or do I mean 'hope'? |

I'd like him and Matt and Elena in the top five. I'd rather not see the pirate or the entitled princess there! |

It wasn't the Sky box or Tivo's fault this time - it was W. The EPG was wrong and had it finishing at five to.

Oh, wonder what the challenge is - with another elimination tomorrow cannot wait to see Smugface, Weeper or Pirate buggering off. |

Chloe...you will be reduced to tears when you remember that goats cheese didn't work in your ice cream - so why use it in a mousse?!?!

Yes, but did you hear what she said when he asked "have you done it before?" and she said "yes with a few...with yogurt, I've done it with yogurt."
![]() And the pirate playing safe again. And ended not up with cardboard if we're lucky. |

It strikes me that she hasn't got an original thought in her head. Goat's cheese and figs are an amazing combination, but I am not sure that the goat's cheese will make for a great mousse - it does, however, make for a beautiful tart filling (I fondly recall a goat's cheese tart I made with redcurrant jelly and a hazelnut shortcrust pastry).
I keep forgetting Trent's there. I like him, but he's a bit of a blank most if the time. |

Yum. I eat loads of goats cheese - the recommended daily amount if cow's milk cheese for diabetics is 1 1/2 oz, which is absurd, and you can have more than twice that of goat's or sheep's. No contest!
