So basically you want a completely different show.

It is what it is, I'm afraid - somewhere between MC UK and MC USA and extremely successful with the current format. They're only ever going to tweak it a little round the edges all the time it's working for them.
I prefer this format to the UK one and I tried so hard with MC USA, but just couldn't cope with it. Think that the UK one is on my list of "can't be bothered to watch anymore" just like Celebrity MasterChef and MasterChef Professionals (the latter mostly because of Marcus Wareing - the moment Michel Roux Jnr went so went I...)

The format works, it's been tweaked a little year on year, but it's ultimately a competition with a huge cash prize and if that means they get a little bit ruthless with competitors then that's what happens...Nidhi just happened (in this instance) to be the victim, she took it well, accepted that on the day she was the weaker of the trio cooking and that was it...

I agree. I think we have to remember that in the MCA format, which is the one most other countries copy, it's not just a cooking competition, which ours is. It's also a reality show. The people who take part are cast, just the way that reality shows like BB are cast, so that there's a balanced mix but, more importantly, they can do their pieces to camera confidently without tripping over their tongues and they can go on their 'journey' for everyone to watch.

That's one reason the annual claim that they're 'the best cooks in the country' is wrong. They're the best cooks in the camera who are prepared to go in front of the camera and potentially make idiots of themselves and be cut down to size if they get too big for their boots. It's the reality element that makes me not bothered if they get the rough edge of the judges' tongues - they chose what they hoped would be the easy route with the money at the end of it and 'cekebruty' along the way for all. They have to accept it comes at a price.

Exactly, unlike competitors in the UK (who seem to be on the periphery of fame, though many have done very well) these ones go on to a book deal straight away, there are numerous articles in various magaines (Hello/OK! etc) about them as they become more and more of a reality show machine product. Not that this is a bad thing...the fact that there are weeks and weeks of episodes helps the viewers to get to know them, to identify with them, to like them. I think that this is a better format than any of the others, the eyes are on the prize and people enter (like the competitors in MKR) knowing that they are going to get followers on Twitter, Facebook and the like who will either love them or hate them...they aren't just entrants in a cookery competition, they are entrants in a reality cookery competition that is all about the money and the name in lights...

! I tried to watch the all stars version too and when I discovered she was on it I gave up.

Edit: loved Sam and Chris tho.
She wasn't in it much, I don't think. Lovely lovely wee Callum won, he was fab. I loved the All Stars series.

Callum was adorable - a lovely young man, he deserved his success.Did we ever see more than one All Stars? I'd love To watch another one.

Oh, cripes, I've just seen it's Nigella week. If ever someone got where they are by who they know not what you know, it's Nigella.

A week of Gary, George and Matt simpering at her, I suppose.

I remember when they were showing that she was out there filming...I think that it is going to be a lot of simpering. You're right, were it not for her dad we'd never have heard of her!

Incisive in its salinity? Really?

Here on Earth we say 'salty'.

She's just trying to show off a large vocab, does she think that being 'English' on this show is something special given that two of the judges are too? Seriously sometimes she's so far up her own posterior it's not true. She was made 'cook famous' because of her over-sexualising of the whole food prep process...I have one of her books (bought for me as a Christmas gift) and I don't think that I've used a single recipe from it in 3 years.

I've tried a few of her recipes. I never made one that didn't need considerable tweaking to make it worth cooking again. I like that as a woman she loves food and eats it with enjoyment, rather than nibbling a tiny amount off a fork with her teeth so she doesn't spoil her lipstick or gazing dreamily into the middle distance with one raised eyebrow, but as a cook I think she's seriously overrated.

Her earlier books were quite good - there are a handful of staples in Domestic Goddess that I use regularly. But yes, she's one of those who's listened to her own hype over the years.

Getting back on to the 'real' topic - did I really hear the words "chocolate" and "beef" together as a meal?

Also, looks like we've found Jimmy's Waterloo in the form of cooking desserts made with chocolate.

It's probably the later one I've seen - my d-i-l has a couple and I don't think she was in the UK when Nigella started out and I doubt she would have thought they were shipping over.

There does seem to me to be a lot of dessert makers this year - usually they're thin on the ground.

And, once again, white 'chocolate' IS NOT CHOCOLATE. Everything that makes chocolate chocolate has been taken out of it. It's basically just fatty sugar.

Yep - white 'chocolate' is sugar, sugar, sugar and not something I choose to partake in. I find it incredibly sickly. Used to love the occasional milky bar when I was a kid, but then I made the mistake of buying a big bar and was so sick!

Mexican cuisine for one uses chocolate in meat dishes. I often add a few squares of dark chocolate into a chilli.

I get the feeling that as chocolate was the main ingredient that it was more than a molé though. Especially with that side of a chocolate tortilla.

Nige is simpering, the judges are simpering, the contestants are simpering - it's gonna be a sickly sweet week. Bring on Heston!

Weird how the 3 featured weeks this year are with British cooks (would have said chefs if it wasn't for this one)

It wouldn't be a year of MCA if Heston weren't involved!

Her lemon linguine is amazing, but that's literally it!

And this year is poetically turning into the year of the sphere

Karmen is annoying me greatly

I think that the sphere must be the new 'in' thing. I can't say that I have made a sphere that big, but I have made filled chocolates using a spherical mould...getting the blinking things out was a nightmare, but I can actually temper chocolate.

Quite right too! I never watch his shows, but love him on MCA - even his masterclasses

Yes, the higher the percentage the less sweet and it adds depth to the dish.

I once tasted a square of 99% chocolate in a chocolatier in Toulouse. It sucked all the moisture out of my mouth, took me hours to recover!

OMG, me too!!

She thinks she's something REALLY special for making momentous decisions such as leaving something she's cocked-up royally off a plate *rollseyes*

What's all this 'Dessert Queen' bollocks?

Sheesh, they've only been there a few weeks and besides - isn't she supposed to wait until other people call her that?
