Apparently the new Google Duo video app is meant to be brilliant and even designed to work on 2G. I just drops video and sticks to the audio call if the connection isn't fast enough and provides really good call quality, it can even switch between wifi and 2G/3G/4G seamlessly apparently.

That's interesting - I downloaded it a few days ago but haven't got around to bullying friends and family to install it yet. Sounds like it would be worth testing...
