Thank you. We did all we could, kinda wish we had done a few things differently in hindsight. But he was cared for, and he knew it. The OH was stroking his head as he faded so he wasn't alone either.
It's more difficult as he was doing so well, it gives you more hope. But you don't always know what's going on inside and how much fight they've got left in them. I think he was becoming exhausted and the ear infection tipped him over the edge. |

Unfortunately he's died. He just curled up in the corner of the hutch and slipped away peacefully. Gutted for him as he was doing so well, but I'm also glad he didn't suffer too much and seemed comfortable as he passed away. I think it might have exhausted him as he became very weak throughout the day. ![]() I was rooting for the little guy and was hoping he would pull through, you did everything you possibly could do for him tho, just remember that *hugs*

![]() We buried him this afternoon. The kids drew him a couple of little pictures that went in his shoe box with him. |

Just a quick thought now the poor little thing has gone , the old hutch are you going to destroy it, I have seen that its better rather than putting the other rabbit back in to it and get him a new hutch

Thanks again.
Our daughter is OK, she was a bit sad but hasn't really grasped what it means. Our sons been very upset about it though. We tried to brace him for it, but I don't think he seriously thought it was a dangerous illness, probably because he didn't come across as seriously ill until the end. The hutch is a difficult one, we were speaking to the vet about it for a while. I don't want to sound shallow about it, but it's a large Ryedale hutch. Due to the cost of them then if we were to destroy it then we wouldn't be able to just replace it. We'd have to get a smaller hutch, which I disagree with on principal. Rabbits need space and a good sized run, Ryedale hutches are over sized, loads of space and have good quality fox proof mesh, locking and security shutters on them. So keeping it would be preferable. One suggestion with these types of hutch was that some people carefully dismantle them, give them a good clean over, take the opportunity to do any touching up or repairs and then reconstruct it. Due to how they are built, that's definitely possible so is probably what we will do. |

It sounds like getting an infection on top of already being so ill pushed him to a point he simply couldn't cope with. Rabbits don't cope well with illness, once their immune system is shot they tend to pick up secondary problems very easily and it all quickly become too much. Don't beat yourself up about it, he chances of surviving Myxo is very low anyway without anything else so you did remarkably well to keep him going this long, and you did all you could to give him a fighting chance at recovery, just a shame it wasn't meant to be .Hope your other bun is alright, I would get some Virkon and scrupulously go over the hutch with it if you want to put him back in it. It'll remove any scent of his companion but unfortunately that's unavoidable. |

Thanks for all the comments. I agree that the ear infection tipped him over, it was right when it appeared that he plummeted, and he went downhill really fast. I'm not beating myself up about it because I don't think we could have done anything about that. I think the whole thing was a case of hoping he doesn't get an infection as he was battling the myxi itself really well. Just shit luck that he got one. 😔
@zarla I think they need some kind of proper treatment for it tbh, as there have been a lot of reports of vaccinated rabbits contracting full blown myxomatosis. The problem is that viruses evolve and adapt. I'm dismantling and cleaning the hutch with a powerful disinfectant at some point next week. I'm also replacing one of the base panels, all hinges/locks and the door frames as they have been gnawed quite a bit. So that should help with some of the parts being replaced. The other bun seems fine still, we've been checking him over, mainly looking for runny eyes and swollen testicles as they are the visible first signs. He seems well in himself so it's looking as though he may have dodged it. Don't want to jinx it though. |

Sorry for the lost of your pet rabbit Fizix, always sad to lose a pet.
I have just been reading on Wiki about Myxomatosis, I know that it is a horrid disease, My brother had rabbits, so we learnt about how bad it was. The rabbits was fine and lived a good life. What I have just read is crazy, read it here |
