Maybe I was too old when I saw those movies but that character never scared me...and when they started introducing more and more humour and the films got sillier, plus kids being able to but plastic Freddy knife gloves etc...

Same for Hannibal Lecter (Hopkins incarnation). First movie was fine, but they just did too many movies and flogged it to death.

In both cases the characters became celebrities and media darlings...once tv shows start making skits about characters and you appear on The Simpsons etc...its the death knell for that particular villain.
I was way too young to be watching them but I saw the first and second - released here in 1985 and 1986 - on video before the later films were released at the end of the decade. Scared the shit out of me I can imagine the first one creeped adult viewers out or at least made them jump in the mid 80's. Watching the remake and all I could think about was Groundskeeper Willy!

I haven't actually seen the film yet, but that thing in Lights Out creeps me out. I was lying in bed when an advert for it came on and the bit where it suddenly shows up and charges, made me turn on my lamp like a scared kid

I always thought Brian Cox made the superior Hannibal Lecter, although admittedly I've never seen much of Mads Mikkelsen on Hannibal the TV show to compare. I'll have to give it a proper watch

I can't believe no one has mentioned Dennis Hopper as Frank Booth in Blue Velvet (1986) yet! Unless I missed it

Some more...

Kiefer Sutherland as Bob Wolverton in Freeway (1996)
The father in The Woman (2011)
The T Rex in Jurassic Park (1993) - only in that famous first scene though, when I saw that originally in the cinema I was so scared I thought I'd stop breathing . Subsequent movies in the franchise made it less scary for me.

Can we count Piper Laurie as Magaret White in Carrie (1976)? she is pretty terrifying to me!

Definitely second the Childcatcher and the shark from Jaws!

Oh God, I haven't seen that film since I was a kid, but I remember Kiefer being so damn creepy. He has the perfect voice for a serial killer. He made Phone Booth great just by talking.

I might be in a minority, but the Child Catcher never scared me!
He didn't scare me either. Someone else brought up the Judderman and he was always a scarier version of the child catcher to me. He had that ballet moves, creep around thing going on, but in a scarier way.

Pennywise the clown.
Totally agree. He terrified me and I had nightmares for months after seeing It at a slumber party when I was about 11.

There was a simmikar article in Empire this month . They left out Christoper Lee as Lord SummerIsle in the Wicker Man . I think depending on your POV he could quite easily be a villain or at least an anti hero

Richard Lynch in the Al Pacino/Gene Hackman movie 'Scarecrow.'

He's as scary as those guys in the 'squeal like a little piggy' scene in Deliverance
And they are scary too.
