Cheap Chinese sets, if you're looking for 'cheap and cheerful' then as good as any at the bottom end.

Hi-sense haven't been in the UK market very long. The sets are Chinese built and whilst they may perform acceptably or even well, their longer term reliability is currently unknown.

Is it worth a punt? That depends on your point of view.

I wouldn't consider buying a 4k TV at the moment, because the broadcast standards may yet change and you could end up with a "4k set" which isn't compatible with future 4k broadcasts.

If you really want a 4k set, you're prepared to take the risk it *may* not be compliant with the final standards and the set *may* have reliability problems or fail at a relatively young age, then that's fine.

I'd happily consider buying a Hi-sense or other cheap set as a 32" for my children's playroom because it will cost less than £ 150 and if it lasts 5 years then it will have been acceptable value. I wouldn't consider one as my main set or spending more than £ 300 on an unproven brand.

There are also some people for whom the priority is to have the 'latest' spec of something and aren't fussed about the longevity of such things as should it fail in 4 years, they'll simply buy another cheap set which has the "latest" features. In some ways that's more common now, for the simple reason that the feature-set of your average TV is changing far more rapidly than it did in the past and relatively, sets have become cheaper.

Rewind to about 1990 and the 'cutting edge' set was probably a 25" NICAM set. Nothing really changed until the late 90s when widescreen sets appeared en-masse.

Since then, you've had on-board DVB, flat screens, HD ready, LED backlit, Full HD, now UHD all in about 15 years.

And here's the rub, back in 1990 that 25" NICAM set wearing either a Panasonic or Sony badge would have easily cost you £ 600, maybe more - you could take £ 100 off that for a "lesser" badge - a Ferguson or Sanyo for example.

Yet a 4k 55" Hi Sense set today will cost you less than £ 600 - and that's 25 years later.

At present I have a reconditioned Panasonic 48 inch 4k active 3d set.It came with a years guarantee.Its a good set.I have had it for about six months.I was thinking of getting a larger screen.Say a 55 inch setI cant stretch to a new a Panasonic.So I was thinking of trying a cheaper alternative.Now I am having second thoughts.

I purchased one a few weeks back after the euros had finished. I had only seen the brand due to them being sponsors. Like you i done some digging around and found some good reviews.

I purchased this one: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...er/5656253.htm after my Samsung Plasma finally gave up the ghost. Like others have point out on here, for the price, if it was only to last 3 - 4 years, i would be happy.

The picture quality is very good. The Netflix and Amazon UHD apps really show the difference and i think that even the upscaled HD is good too. There are a reasonable amount of apps to choose from, BBC iPlayer, Redbull TV etc. Although part of me wishes i paid out another £100 or so pound for an Android TV so i could load apps such as Kodi.

IMHO its worth a punt.

Pay no nonsense to the cheap Chinese tat brigade - Hisense are the 4th biggest TV manufacturer in the world but have only in the last couple of years gone global.

The one thing that let's them down is their firmware - if something doesn't work then you will have to wait patiently until they resolve it. Having said that they make very good TV's and punch way above their weight - if you can get a better spec and bigger Hisense than a middle of the road Samsung, Sony or Panasonic then by all means go for it ... I doubt you would regret it.

I went from a Panasonic VT50 plasma to a Hisense 55" K720 as a stop-gap buy and was shocked just how good it performed.

Oh and by default they come with a 2 year warranty in the UK.

It doesn't alter the fact they are cheaply made using cheap components, Vestel sell more TV's in Europe than anyone else - quantity doesn't mean it's not cheap tat

So how many Hisense TVs have you seen Nigel? I've seen 3...

Given they're far less common than Vestel sets, you'd expect to see fewer.

I've seen (and installed) 3 or 4, they are a cheap and cheerful TV, and OK if that's what you're looking for (and one was for a multi-millionaire) - obviously I can't comment on reliability as they are too new yet, but there's no reason to imagine they are any better than other cheap sets.

The previous 'cheap Chinese invasion' was Haier - those proved to be poor performing, and poor reliability.

I've also installed a couple of Hisense fridge freezers, again, they seemed perfectly fine for the price.

I first saw a pair being put up on an auditorium last year. They were 65 inch, but can't remember what model now. What struck me first was the sound; normally 'cheap' TVs have rubbish sound, but just one set did an amazing job of filling the space (that wasn't how it was designed to work, it was just during testing).

The picture quality was excellent, almost up to plasma standards. They certainly looked good in a bright room, I can't comment on low light environments.

As mentioned above, the crowd at AVForums (who are normally fairly fussy) have had mostly positive comments so far.

Nigel I suggest you do a bit of reading - it is easy to think of Hisense as some generic Chinese junk merchant but they are a whole lot better than that.

All TV's are built to a "price point" and as it stands HIsense are punching way above what you should expect at their price point - I would be more inclined to call the big players TV's at that price point as "junk".

No doubt you thought that the Korean giants Samsung and LG as producing cheap tat as well ... in fact I wouldn't be surprised if you think they still do.

'Reading' doesn't help - simply looking at the sets does, not to mentioning looking at their prices (they aren't selling you a £100 TV for £300)

The future will show how good their sets are - but I'm bemused why people seem to imagine cheap priced sets from an obscure Chinese manufacturer are going to be 'wonderful'?


As I've always said (and as anyone in the trade would agree) they are the two middling makes, and have worked up to that point over many years.

Historically I've repaired many Samsung and LG CRT sets over the years, and they weren't bad at all. LG of course started here as 'Goldstar', then 'Lucky Goldstar', then LG (which they claim isn't short for Lucky Goldstar - but it sounds a bit coincidental). Back in the CRT days, Samsung were probably better than Goldstar.

It is still too much of a lottery as to whether a TV will be any good.

If the picture quality is good on Highsense TVs, and the Screen quality control is also good, then the main worry would be the circuits and capacitors. and if they will last more than a year or two before blowing.

What ever make we buy I just don't think we should have to worry about getting it home and having banding, DSE or light bleed issues, and if we don't get those, then having to worry about the old, turn it off, turn it back on and BANG a capacitor or circuit goes and it won't turn on again.

Firmware on TV sets, things was so much easier before we had firmware on Tv sets

I do know of someone who have had a Hisense for a while and they are happy with it for most part, the only problem is that it seems to take ages to change channels, so they say.

The problem with going from a plasma to a LCD/LED set is you notice the drop in quality, i dread my plasma going wrong.

Yes unfortunately Smart TV's are a must for some and quite a few expect their TV to do everything and then some when that is obviously not going to happen.

Always better to simply buy an external device and take a lot of pain out of what can be an already painful experience ... personally I don't even connect my TV to the internet unless it is to get firmware updates.

On the subject of going from a plasma to an LCD I too dreaded that as I always hated the artificial processed look of that technology but my HIsense K720 has very deep blacks with the excellent full array local dimming and left me gobsmacked as to how good it was for the money. I once bought a Sony LCD and absolutely hated the variable quality it produced and had bought my parents a refurbished Panasonic LCD last year that was absolute pants and was swiftly returned.

I have seen a fair few TV sets, different makles, different models, different prices and to be honest the so called smart functions on them are normally so slow I lose the will to live.
Even one of the higher end sonys with android was still slow, so even if I did get a new Tv with smart functions it would never be connected to the net. My Blue-ray player is fine for Netflix and the now Tv box is ok for Now TV and You Tube, if i get the PS3 fixed it will replace the Blue-ray player.



I am glad i am not the only one who morns the lost of plasma, I know my Tv is getting on now and some people say why don't I get a new one, but the pitcure is good on it, certtainly better sound than most new TV sets, the only two problems with it is it uses a fair bit of power and it is flipping heavy to move.
I might have a look at Hisense when my TV dies, I do not use my Tv that much, if I watch stuff is it normal from Now TV or netflix, sometimes from You tube. Normal TV watching is pretty rare, in fact the last time I watched normal Tv was last Sunday i watched Robot Wars. So I really would not want to spend too much on a TV, but I still need decent quality.

What is the sound quality like on the hisense?

I took the plunge and bought the hisense 50 inch 4k tv.I ordered it from Compton and moore on ebay sunday evening It was dlivered today Tuesday 30/08/2016. at 9 a.m. It came from Doncaster,it was free delivery and it cost me £429.So far I am pleased with the tv.

I'd recommend getting a TV with an OLED display when you're ready to replace your plasma TV. I had a Sony LCD for many years and was never really happy with the poor black levels it reproduced. A few months ago I took the plunge and replaced it with a UHD/HDR OLED smart TV and, so far, I'm very happy with it.

The latest UHD/HDR models are horrendously expensive, but HD OLED sets with pretty large screens are reasonably priced.

Even today sound reproduction on many TVs is relatively poor. You're often expected to pay extra for a separate sound bar. If you already have a stereo hifi and can arrange the speakers so the TV is placed centrally between them, I would recommend that to improve sound quality. If you can stretch to an AV amp with 5.1 channels (or more), even better.

Sure the Hisense sets that I've had in store have been Vestel sets, same remotes and generic menus system as the Linsar's we've had & crappy JVC badged things.

I have a few friends with them and to be honest they do punch well above their price. Picture quality is fine and sound is OK. I wouldn't expect much in the way of after sales though they do come with 2 years warranty which may be back to base rather than in home.

As for firmware, tbh is there anybody who doesn't use an external device or sky or VM for smart features ?

OLED sets have not proved their reliability, I have heard of some work ok and other go down after 12 months.

To be honest, I do not watch a lot of Tv, it is mainly netflix or Now Tv and the odd DVD/blue-ray, i have stopped paying for my TV licence, so I have a couple of months left if that and I will not be able to watch Tv anyway.

As for audio, i am trying to get rid of the clutter below the TV not make more
