Everyone seems to blame Brian Kirkwood for Hollyoaks dip in quality of over the years but now things have started to improve and the only change that has happened is that Iain MacLeod has left to take over Emmerdale and I've got to say from what I've seen the last few weeks on Emmerdale and from the spoilers I've read I'm not very impressed with MacLeod so far.

So is it possible that Kirkwood wasn't the problem and maybe he isn't very hands on with Hollyoaks, kind of like Kieran Roberts on Corrie and that MacLeod was the one writing the stories and responsible for the show's issues?

Can't speak for Hollyoaks as I don't watch it, but I'm liking Iain's work on Emmerdale and have especially enjoyed the scenes of "warmth" and "humour" that he has brought back. Having said that, there hasn't been much of that lately.

Have noticed an improvement only thing which I don't understand yet is the influx of characters and no sign of any exits plus the introduction of 3 new mcqueens

I must have missed the warmth and humor scenes, all he seems to have done is turn Chrissie into a cartoon villain and break up every couple in the village.....did you read the spoilers for the first week of September? they are terrible

I've been enjoying Mcleod's Emmerdale for now.
The writing for some characters is better and the show is less erratic than under Kate Oates. Sure, I'm not fond of the romantic pairings and affaira but neither was I when Oates was in charge. Overall I have only seen improvement since he took over, I'll wait until the new year to see if I feel the same.

So you think Chrissie and Moira are being written better? Chrissie has turned into a cartoon and Moira is acting ridiculous trying to divorce Cain for acting like Cain. I did enjoy the stuff he did with Charity at first but I don't like her going after Cain.

I think Charity and Chas are both being written better, two characters I didnt like before. I think Moira is actually being written better, yes, I like that she isn't giving into his obnoxious and arrogant "apologies" and I'm also enjoying Chrissie's new direction, so far at least - depending on how far they take her.

IDK, I think the problem is that both personality changes have come out of nowhere. Both might have worked if it wasn't so sudden and the reasons where legitimate

Official full spoilers (not press office hints) have only been issued up to Sept 2nd. The weeks after that are embargoed and any site repeatedly posting them or allowing them to be posted will most likely lose future notifications.

I think the reasons are legitimate though, Moira was just pushed too far by Cain making her choose him over her daughter. Chrissie has been pushed too far by all the men in her life and has also been traumatised by her own drastic behaviour.

Perhaps it's more acceptable to me because Emmerdale already went downhill last year for me, and I care less about a lot of the characters but am finding the show more entertaining than recent history while being less invested.

IDK I guess I'm just not buying it, I think part of the problem is I hate that they are breaking up Coira and that Chrissie ran Andy out of town.

Emmerdale has improved since he took over so I doubt the two things are related. He was also only one of about 5 series producers at HO who worked under BK. I doubt his exit had too much of an impact on a show that is that top heavy.

This makes a lot of sense, if you take Emmerdale as mindless entertainment it can still be enjoyable but it is so far moved from reality now to have any kind of real connection to it. The annoying part now is when directors get marry about not winning ward and the cast wanting to be respected as proper thespians. If you willingly take part in something which is very low brow ( which can still be enjoyable ) don't be suprised when nobody thinks of you as a serious "artiste".

That's s not entirely fair. Soap operas are the McDonalds of the acting world but in the same way you respect that the staff in McDonalds perform well under extreme pressure ( in my local one the customer service is excellent) then the staff on soaps deserve that too, if they are doing a good job of entertaining us. Most people cannot afford artistic principles if they want to make a living out of their art.
