yes alot of us eastenders have moved to essex so thats why there is alot of confusion but the traditional essex accent is not the same as east end cockney although there is some similarity, i would say east end accents are faster in speech

Yes, I think London is faster. Maybe Essex has become so big in the media, that everyone is assuming anyone who has that type of accent is from Essex. To be honest, I should know the difference between East /South/north London but I don't really listen out for it. Once a guy from the North asked if I was from Essex and I was rather offended because I do have a Southern accent but it is not in any way Towie Essex-like. because I know some girls from Essex and they are posh, so they do not all speak like the Towie posse.

You don't have to be just from East London to have a cockney accent, there are cockney's in all parts of london.

In what possible way can Walthamstow be considered the east end? Even Stratford is pushing it to be in the east end so places like Walthamstow are positively rural in the eyes of real eastenders.

Yes, he's a Londoner not an Essex boy but east end - no way

Cockney is someone born within the sound of Bow bells. So there are not cockneys in all parts of London.

I spend a lot of time in and around Brentwood and I've never heard anyone speak like those towie muppets.

I'm from Southwark and most of my close mates are from east London/Essex borders (mainly Woodford, Wanstead, Redbridge area) and I think I speak completely differently to them

Yes, my friend is from Brentwood and she went to private school - she is very well spoken!

Originally from Southwark!? I am, also! Which part? Do you have a South London accent, or a general London accent?

realistically only tower hamlets is the east end and parts of hackney but over the years we consider all of east london as eastenders or anywhere with the post code E.

That's so out of date, so your saying only people in the east end have cockney accents come on now.

Yeah, he comes from Walthamstow. I tend to sometimes mistake a cockney accent for an Essex accent.

I don't know anyone who thinks the whole of East London is considered the east end. I have loads of friends from all over East London and I think they would PTSL at the thought of Walthamstow being thought of as east end

The east end is the same as it's always been and Walthamstow isn't and never will be a part of it.

I grew up about a 10 minute walk from The Gin Palace. Moved out to Kent when I was 20 and always worked in The City so my accent is much more subtle and had the edges knocked off over the years. The South London thing shows in certain words at times though and the accent gets stronger when I've had a couple of drinks

It's not out of date, its a fact. To be a cockney, you have to be born within the sound of Bow Bells, which is St Mary Le Bow in Cheapside.

Tbh, very, very few people actually have a cockney accent these days. Cockney is a very specific accent which isn't to be confused with any other regular London one.

They have London accents, and it is not out of date. A Cockney is someone born within the sound of Bow bells.

Oh wow, this is getting very spooky. I lived very close by to that location, also. May I be ask which schools you went to?

As someone who was born & raised in Walthamstow many moons ago I always considered myself to be from East London

If you want FMs to remember every borough of London and the relevant accents, borders, etc. you're going to have to return the favour for those from other cities and learn the accents, borders and regions of other major cities around the country - Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, etc.

It'd only be fair

There'll be a test later

That's fair. I do actually know the difference between the major accents, like those you stated and others like Wales, Scots,Newcastle, for example. But every single region....no. probably not.
So, mistakes are unavoidable but...... don't assume everyone is from Essex!

I always figured people talking about Essex on here were talking about TOWIE and shows of that ilk (Ex on the Essex Beach ) and those who come from or appear in those types of shows, rather than where people may hail from specifically, but I may be wrong.

Essex on the Beach! Genius Actually, yes...you may have a point! That's interesting , I had not thought of it but it makes total sense.

It might originate from there but that don't mean it couldn't spread other parts of london are very close to the east end

I would say they all sound the same to me but I might get accused of being Essexist.

I think we are confusing the accent with the definition of Cockney. People who live in London have a London accent, which includes Cockney's. However a Cockney is someone born within the sound of Bow bells.

I have another one for you, Kentish men and men of Kent. Yes there is a difference.
