has anyone else noticed that the music over the past decade is slowly getting worse imo. the music that is in the charts recently is either old (as in before 1995) songs remakes of them. before anyone starts saying that i am wrong i have seen elvis presly, nirvana, queen and michel jackson in the charts.

You have a point but there are also a load of really good new bands about particularly at the moment, theres the Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand Scissor sisters, Razorlight, and the Libertines haven't been around that long. Isn't the fact that older artists are entering the charts a good thing as it shows their popularity and will inevitably introduce their music to a new/younger audience?

Hmmm...let's have a look at the charts:

Today -- 10 years ago -- 20 years ago

The most obvious difference is the decrease in traditional 'pop' songs and the increase in rap and R 'n' B. I can see why people complain.....there are far less catchy, uncomplicated pop songs around today.

The only real solution is to not rely on the charts or mainstream radio/TV but look for the music yourself because I can't see anything changing any time soon........

No but music is subjective. I can listen to a few rap artists but not many, and mostly older stuff.

What I like (including rap) may be considered absolute crap by someone else. Doesnt matter to me in the slightest.

Music isnt getting worse in my view, its just that the commercial bile pop is still around, and most corperate music companies tend to get behind the "crap song/quick buck" bands rather than the real talent that just needs finding..

I think people should really stop blaming Rap and R'nB acts for the demise of music.

There is such a massive influx of 'indie' and 'rock' acts these days, that one can hardly tell one from the other.

I also think the fact that most artistes think less of a long term career has 'helped' the aided of music.

I think it's got so crap because there are so many manufactured bands who are only hired because they look good rather than whether they have talent or not.

Rap/RnB has been around for years - maybe it's not for some but I don't think it's contributed to the downfall of the UK charts! All the crappy boy/girl bands on the other hand...

I agree, there is more emphasis on manufacturing an image/sound that will sell, rather than actual talent and everything has become so much more disposable.

However, with so much rap and R'n'B in the charts every week (just look at this week's top 10), it can't be discounted as one of the other reasons why people complain about current music.

I used to like several rapper in the 80s because it all seemed so new and different.

I don't think it's fair to say that the rapper/r&b acts aren't any good because a lot of them (esp. the r&b ones) have got really good voices. I think the problem is that a lot of the songs sounds so similar.

Nothing is new anymore - even the good bands sound like those who have gone before them. I suppose we will all just have to accept that the exciting days of music when it was all new and society was changing so much have gone and we have to put up with the dregs.

My take on rap and R'n'B is the same as with most other genres....the better, more creative and original artists are found outside the charts....and there's always something good to be found.

i don't think music is getting worse - i think a lot of it is because, sadly, when we get a bit older music itself isn't as new to us, and we become more aware of more crap music.

i think pretty much every generation since there's been pop/rock music has complained made the same complaint. i remember thinking music was particularly bad in the early 90s - it was all rick astley and jive bunny for example.

but i think recently there has been huge amounts of great music around recently.

Looks are a factor in just about every band's success and probable signing, including all the ones that are classed as credible. Radiohead are about the only "real" band in the charts that has an ugly lead singer. Looks sell records, credible band/artist or not.

But you all mention "charts"..who cares about that commerical garbage.Widen your horizons listen to groups from South Africa or Mali or Iraq.... wherev er...why does it have to be officially "popular" to register with folk.Just because Kylie whinges on and on for years on bland boring end does not make her ..or others "good"..it is just accessible and people are too lazy to be adventurous. There has always been fantastic music around..the "charts" is not where you are likely to find it..with a few exceptions...

I think that's rubbish. I don't think looks come into it at all when credible indie/rock bands are signed. If the music's good enough it doesn't matter what they look like. The good bands around at the moment aren't exactly supermodels .

There was as much bad music about in the past, it's just that no-one remembers it. In the same way, in 20 years time, people will be complaining about music being better in the past, but won't remember atrocities like Akon.

I agree music is getting worse...Even the really good songs now cant compare to the songs back then, or even just from the 80s or 90s. I really love the Killers and Mariah Carey (she been around for a while) though. I used to like rap believe it or not, but now its just awful..I mean sure 2pac was good but still rap isnt my favorite type of musical expression.
Clapton (now he's good)~ Are you saying you saw Queen remade??? If so, who the hell remade them?

Music isn't getting worse, CHART music is getting worse.

Trust me there is some really good stuff out there.

The fact is we now live in a world where almost anyone can produce CD quality music.

the result of this, a lot more underground unsigned music and a chart aimed at selling bubblegum records to kids.

don't worry about it, just go out and listen to some unsigned bands or go raving and hear some new style dance music.

I'm into breakbeat and dub and there is some really cool stuff happening with new styles new technology to create the music.

oh yeh and on the point of rap/mc ing well if you honestly can't appreciate it then you dont get music.

rapping or MCing, at its best work with the beats of a song to create a more complex rythym.

A good MC can hit every sylabal (mind block on the spelling, forgive me)_on a 16 beat.

I don't know maybe you just havent heard good rapping, listen to how crisp they are on the beats, its like a talking drum.

rapping is very musical
its all happening man, you just need to go looking for it.

Utter nonsense.

Remove Revolution, and a select other few form the Beatles entire back catlogue and you won't have an album left that could compete with something like 'Digital Ash in a Digital Urn'.

People have been listening to too much Slade tbh.

Does your granny always tell you, that the old songs are the best?

Probably, she's making a sweeping and incorrect generalisation though.

i did mean the chart music, sorry if i didn't make it clear, i go and see loads of unsigned bands but what englands needs is a band to come along and do something compleatly different, like the sex pistols and queen did.

There aren't any really good big rockbands about anymore. There are ok, rock bands, Franz Ferdinand, Libertines and because rock is at such a low at the mo, theyve been hailed as great rock bands, but there are no new bands that are as big or as good as Guns N Roses, ACDC, Led Zep, all the new bands aren't remotely as good as them, hence Franz Ferdinand being voted the best rock band of last year!
