Check out Farmer's Choice. Top quality free-range meat (and fish and other stuff) from known and named sources. We've had an account with them for 29 years now, and the quality has never wavered. Based in Hampshire, they deliver (frozen) across the UK. You can just buy individual items, or, like us, set up an account and order in bulk every few months to fill the freezer.

All meat ends up in the slaughterhouse, whether it is free range or factory farmed. The reason why I went vegan was not just for ethical reasons, but mistrust in the meat and dairy industries (horsemeat ring any bells?).
Meat from a butcher would more than likely be at the cheaper end of the scale...why? Because they have to compete with supermarkets. I do not agree with GM food by the way. A lot of butchers to not really compete with supermarkets, certainly not around here, I do not see their prices reduce, they are still more expensive than supermarkets and yet they keep going. One butcher is a few yards away from our local Tescos and yet seem to do a pretty good trade. They have two shops in the same place, vacross the entrence to a small mews from each other, this picture may give you an idea. The first shop is just a normal butchers, the second sells hot stuff, like sausage, bacon baps. their sausage baps are great. They also do pork rolls . They can not be doing too bad to keep two shops open with Tescos just being to the left down the road a little. The things with butchers is that you get a good lot of meat in your pies and they are chunky, not minced unless you want them minced. You choose the lifestyle you lead, just like people who only eat organic food, no proof it is any better for you. My Dad is 87 years old, if he enjoys a decent pie then it is worth getting for him, his is not in the best of health anyway, so have what he wants. Myself, I am trying to cut down a bit on dairy, but it is not easy, I have found some spread sold by Sainsburys which while not 100% dairy free is pretty decent on toast. Vitalife is ok as well. I find nothing wrong with eating meat, animals do it and we are still animals, at the end of the day. The difference is we should be able to treat the animals humainly and make sure they do not suffer. I just wonder why you are in a thread about meat when you clearly do not eat it or any other products to do with animals |

There are plenty of villages and towns with no butcher now, sadly, due I suppose to the supermarkets, where meat is much cheaper.

I used to use Westin gourmet, but now they have merged with muscle food the quality has gone down hill well in fact it's a totally different product.
Anyone recommend anywhere to order steak online? Farmisons 32 day aged. Though I have only ordered from them and waiting delivery on 42 day aged sirloin. But prices but they do offers, check the website to see what on offer. |

Meat from a butcher would more than likely be at the cheaper end of the scale...why? Because they have to compete with supermarkets. The horse meat scandal was caused by the use of prepacked ready meals from dubious sources because too many people want to microwave a meal in a plastic container with no idea what's in it. And if you think the vegan options are any better sourced, just ask yourself what do you think the factories do with the vegatables that are left on the floor of any factory? They go in your ready meals. I seem to remember a scandal a good few years back about Linda McCartney vegetarian meals using meat products in there recipes. So don't thinking your free from food scandals. I have recently got very selective in my choice of meat, it means smaller portions but I appreciate my steak and pork a heck of a lot more. Heck I can even tell I'm eating pork, not 'Unidentified White Meat number 4' these days. And yes I don't have a lump of 8oz rump steak (uncooked weight), but my 35 day dry aged sirloin hardly loses any size when it's cooked. |

I have now had my delivery from Farmisons, the meat is superb quality, yes not cheap, but for this quality you have to pay.

Earlier today I ordered a capon for Christmas from : https://www.keevilandkeevil.co.uk/home they look quite good - based at Smithfields and think I will order from them again. I only eat free range meat and although it's more expensive, would prefer to eat less meat than eat what they sell in supermarkets. The only decent butchers in my town has closed so will be buying mine online.

Yes had 2 orders from them in the last month and couldn't fault it. Arrived when they said it would, nice and cold. Good quality meat, hubby had steak from them this week and said it was excellent. Sausages are very meaty and don't loose loads of fat as they cook. Chicken breast is good. Meatballs were a bit dry but I cooked them in the oven and they would probably be better fried in a drop of oil or on a bbq in summer.

So there isn't a single butchers in north London? A "city person" would understand the concept of jumping a £1.50 London bus to get to one.
Come on, you're bragging about living in London whilst crying that you cannot get to a butchers! I'm a Londoner born and bred, don't try to kid me. You'll be claiming north London has no running water free of cholera next. And that's before we address the Aldis and Lidls, that all sell affordable dry-aged fillet, T-bone, rib-eye and sirloin steaks! At no point do I see the poster either bragging about living in London, nor crying about being able to get to a butcher. My reading of the thread sees a guy merely asking for recommendations for online butchers. It is nobody else's business why, but there are numerous reasons why people like to shop online today, quality, availability. The London stuff only came about because the poster was, in my opinion, needlessly interrogated by others about his reasoning. I suspect he only offered the personal info in defence of these needless comments, otherwise he probably wouldn't have even needed to mention it had people just taken the comment for what it was - a simple recommendation for a good online butcher. |

Do you actually read anyones posts?
I do not have a local butcher close to me. Do you understand how big North London is? Sad representation of what some might think of as non city person's pov unfortunately. I live in a rural area and there are three butchers in the town and surrounding area. There's even a mobile one who goes round the little villages! |

I avoid posting here these days it isn't a friendly place anymore. |

Just had my second delivery from Farmisons and have to say all the meats they've sent look superb. Duck Breasts, Lamb chops, pork chops, mutton chops, chicken leg and wings, they look really good. And 2kg of beef mince. Now as I have admitted they are not cheap, but checking out the offers on line and free postage over £75.00 starts to make it better and better value. And now I sound like a advert.
Just done the maths and it works out at just over £3.00 a meal for two people or £1.56 per person per meal. I reckon that's pretty good value for money Just adding to the debate, so I'll shut up now. |

Not really. I was also surprised when I read about the lack of a local butcher tbh.

There's even a mobile one who goes round the little villages! ![]() I live in one of the largest towns in Scotland - with over 200 shops - and not one single independent butcher. It's the tiny, but older, towns around us that have butchers. I'm perfectly happy with my Tesco/Sainsburys/Asda meat ordered online, but it's nice to see what else is out there for those of us who have to shop online for whatever reason. Thanks for the thread. |

On line butchers are becoming a great way to get what you want, if that's cheap and cheerful or artisan, rare breed, organic, wild or hand reared, and there is probably a wider choice available now than any butchers have ever been able to supply on the High Street. |

We have fillet steak a few times a month and we get it from Lidl.
We used to get Sainsbury "Taste the Difference" at almost £6 a steak but found the Lidl steaks equally good. We also buy their marinaded duck breasts and they're excellent. An aside: There have been threads on here about cooking a perfect steak. I followed the Sainsbury instruction for the fillet - 2 mins on each side in the pan on high, then 9 mins in the oven at 180 for medium rare - with disbelief thinking I'd complain next day given the price. It's now the way I cook them every time to perfection and friends and family have followed. |
