Brevecto/Milbemax
Wondered if anyone has used this combination of flea/tick/worm prevention on their dog.
I usually have the Advocate/Drontil combination, but my vet is now prescribing this new treatment, as it treats for ticks as well. Accepted it, then looked online and not entirely happy with the reviews. Some using it with no ill effects but there are a lot of reports of serious and in some cases fatal reactions. Of course you don't know what underlying problems the sick dogs might have had. Rang the vet and they are happy to order me her usual treatments, were really nice when I apologised for being over cautious. They have only been prescribing it for 3weeks. Have never found any ticks on my dog - yet, Just wondered what others think. |

Bravecto is a new 3 monthly tablet for dogs for fleas and ticks, instead of having to use the spot on vials. It's been in our vets for a year or so now and I've heard only good things about it. I have given it my dog no problem, along with her Milbemax worming tablet and she is completely fine. I have to say I prefer it to a vial as it doesnt make a mess of her coat although it is pricier than three months worth of spot on would be. It is up to you if you want to stick to what you currently use, but it's worth bearing in mind that the reason vets are getting new parasite treatments in is because the others have been around a long time, many are no longer very effective if at all , and newer stuff with more recent and up to date ingredients are needed that fleas, ticks etc haven't become immune/adapted to.

The negative effects on some dogs has completely put me off trying it. I rarely use spot ons as I have grave misgivings about the chemicals but if I do I use advocate but obviously it shouldn't be used on collies. I use milbemax for worming as I've found others cause vomiting but it never has. Drontal has produced projectile vomiting in some of mine after years of no problem so I don't know if they changed something a while back. Quite a few of my dog owning friends had the same problem so moved to milbemax too. It's not new, been around years and I've never heard of problems with it. It's effective against lungworm too.
Years ago I use program tablets with no ill effects on the dogs and would use them again. Although I agree that some products seem to have lost their effectiveness I also think that pet owners are seen as a huge market for new products by the drug companies and they generally cost more. Tick prevention is going to be a huge issue now they have been found carrying Babesiosis in some area. Anti tick collars seem to be the best way of dealing with them. No single product will cover ticks, fleas, worms and lungworm and in order to do so seems to involve a very scary amount of chemicals

We switched to Bravecto (every 3 months) and Milbemax (monthly) from Milbemax/Advocat a year ago as our male Jack-Chi would go into hiding for hours after having Advocat applied and would shake forever. Our Irish JR girl would squeak for about an hour and it seemed to irritate her skin.
I had always decided that they have to put up with Advocat due to the risk of lungworm (we live in a high risk area and have lots of slugs) but the second I read that Milbemax had been approved for lungworm prevention I spoke to the vet about ditching the Advocat. They were hesitant due to entirely missing out on flea/tick prevention and suggested Bravecto. No problems at all and no more mess

Thanks for your feedback, she's got her 3 month supply of advocate/drontal but may change next time to include tick protection.
