I was not being a pedant, far from it, if you wish to make a point, say what you mean then, rather than saying some and then being critical of someone when what you said was not what you meant!

I'll ask you again, seeing as you didn't answer last time. Did you understand the point being made?

I did answer you, the point being made was that you said that match was a one off match, when it was not, it was a two legged match, so if you wish to say that a match was a two legged match, then say that.
Blimey. |

It isn't being very constructive continuing with this line. Im sure you knew that Jim De Ville meant one off in the correct context as per the discussion at hand. It would be good if you could stick to discussing what was clearly meant instead of picking up on such a minor thing?

Sorry, I didn't make my point very well there. I agree its not about history but what I meant was in response to you saying it prevents other leagues like France from closing the gap but that gap existed whether it be in co-efficient terms or simply by watching who won the trophies.
Its closing off a level of competition that was never really there anyway. This season sees PSG, Lyon and Monaco in the CL. Monaco beating Villarreal in the qualifier which again a saw a team from a top nation getting knocked out. Now who is to say under the current rules France wouldn't be able to overtake Italy. It's not like Italy's record in European competition has been stellar bar Juve reaching the final. I just feel what UEFA are now doing is making sure the historic big nations always get what they feel they deserve when in reality we should let the results play there part. The qualifier shouldn't by default be easy for every big side. Sometimes you will see a draw which sees two bigger sides face each other but that's football and to now change the competition to make sure that doesn't happen just looks dodgy. |

But the door was always open rather than practically being closed for good.

It is more of the fact that none other of our teams, (plus Germany, Spain and Italy), have to have any teams qualifying, rather than the number at which you cut them off at.
At least with one team qualifying, there is that sense of they could be eliminated (see Everton for example), and so a sense of "fair play" is still there, whereas having no teams having to qualify takes all of that away. |

It also takes a little bit of competitiveness out of the PL itself. The race between third and fourth (whenever there was one) won't have anything riding on it any more.

Of course I see what you are saying but as I mentioned before the squabbling broke out, who decides where the level is appropriate for automatic qualification? Why is 3 English teams plus one qualifying (which they tend to do) ok for competition but 4 is stifling competition? Why not have two or just the Champions? I think we know the answer.
As batdude said I think having a qualifiers even for the big leagues makes it possible for to see what some would say upsets in qualifiers so even though by default they are awarded the most slots it's not always the case all of the them will get in. We all know money is the driving force and not only that but the risk of a breakaway comp scaring UEFA into action. |

I think a lot of this came about with the England 3rd place Italy 4th place in the coefficients scenario.
There was a danger of England dropping to three for a bit and Italy looking for four but that has passed so they are just protecting the bigger league now |

There is that and UEFA made a rod for its own back as once the genie was let out that was it.

Not if you've seen Blackburn Rovers finish bottom of a group while fighting each other on the pitch it's not.

I donīt think itīs up to the english Teams, for me itīs up to the style of Play in the PL.
The Speed is great in the PL but nowadays there are smaller Teams who stand compact in der defense so you need the passing game which is practiced in Spain. You can see the results of it in the last few years, Spain won the CL and EL the last few years. |

Only a few thousand have made it to the ground, apparently.
There's an obvious gag there but I'm not going to make it... |
