You do realize that the term "Yankee" applied to people from only a small area of the United States, don't you? To apply it to the entire nation just shows how ignorant the speaker is. You wouldn't call every British person a "Geordie", would you?

How often have you heard "Limey" from an American? Now, be truthful. I venture to bet if you polled a bunch of Americans most wouldn't know what nation that even applied to. It's just not used, however much you'd like to think it is.

If you don't want to stop using pejoratives, go ahead. But I will keep telling you it's a pejorative. Not that I think it's going to stop you, but maybe it will the next person. Someone who's willing to learn, and to change for the better.”

Ah, you're still going I see

Good luck and all the best

When I read the thread title I thought it was referring to Aubrey's liking for the bright orange/yellow cheese I hated so much when I lived in the USA

I do like Aubrey though

Please spare me, EnricolV.

I'm well aware of where the term yankee originates. You're the oversensitive one who's acting like it's on a par with being called n*gg*r.

Secondly, I've lived for years in England with a N. American accent and then for many years in Canada (and countless stays/travels in America) with an English accent. I received an equal number of stupid, insensitive comments in both scenarios.

The Canadians and Americans were actually far more condescending on average because they don't look up to English culture with the same reverence nor familiarity that the English do being inundated with American TV/culture.

Often, lighthearted exchanges would quickly devolve into "All English men sound gay", "bad teeth", "saved your ass in WWII", etc.

And yes, I've been called, and heard others called Limey numerous times. Limey is probably on a par with Yankee and it really doesn't bother me at all.

Could also fish out probably a dozen well known American films with, "limey c*cksucker" or some other such reference. Who's crying about it?

That stuff is what Americans call 'American Cheese'. And yes, it is a rather apt descriptor for Aubrey since it's almost entirely artificial and tastes like plasticky cardboard.

Do many people still use the term? I expect if presented with the film title, "A Yank at Oxford", many would think it was about undergraduate masturbation
