Do you think, as the average age of viewers goes up, Overs will gain more traction?

It was an oft-mocked category where more joke acts came through, but the success of Maloney, Sam Bailey, and Ben Haenow at the same time as the series seems to have lost relevance with a young audience would suggest that they might be caught between a rock and a hard place here.

They can't keep putting only joke acts through in the Overs category. But if they put serious talented acts through, they run the risk of large swathes of the now older audience identifying with them and them dominating the votes throughout.

I'm interested to see how they manage the categories and keep viewers interested in the Boys and Girls this year and in the next few.

That's an interesting observation...however, I must disagree for the most part. It's true that the dynamic of the Overs category as a whole has changed over the years, from a joke category to one that has an equal if not greater shot at winning the show. However, it honestly just depends on who's in it...here's a look at recent years:

2012: Gary Barlow vows to restore glory to the Overs, but has little success except with Christopher in the face of especially strong Girls/Boys categories. Winner: James Arthur (Boys)
2013: The Overs were likely one of the stronger if not the strongest category this year, something that didn't necessarily translate in the live shows due to Sharon Osbourne's mentoring but ended up with a victor. Winner: Sam Bailey (Overs)
2014: The Overs again impressed from their sheer talent, and Simon managed to pick a fantastic 6 for Judges' Houses, and sailed through the live shows without losing an act until Week 6, as well as claiming the final 2 spots. Winner: Ben Haenow (Overs)
2015: Needless to say, the Overs were a disaster in 2015, with one or two standouts in an otherwise entirely lacklustre category. Simon didn't put too much of an effort either, and it was a lost cause for the most part. Winner: Louisa Johnson (Girls)

Personally, after hearing the feedback from the 6 Chair Challenge, my bets are placed on either Simon winning with the Girls, or Sharon with the Overs.

I must admit I do find the overs cat more interesting as I am not into groups, or boy singers.

Only Murs was also in the overs at 26.

They change the age range for the overs each year. Possibly depends on the acts that get though to the stage they are split into the categories.

The problem tends to he that they treat someone in their late 20's or early 30's like they're a cruise ship singer from the 1980's.

No they don't always!

Take Fleur And Olly for example! Both 26 in the overs, They got it completely right, up-tempos, only a couple of ballads and of course unknown songs, if managed right, I didn't even think as Fleur and olly as an over they were just way to cool.

With who has the over category i am expecting cruise ship ballads, an AOR type rock act.

Don't expect any fleur uptown funk type performances

I'm not expecting it at all Fleur was a different kind of artist one that Simon wouldn't normally put in a overs group but so was olly I was merely saying they aren't always treated like cruise ship as there has been a few exceptions
