I don't know if this man's claim is true or not. But, can you imagine living that long? So many memories in that brain of his. So many things he has seen. Wow, just wow.
Would I like to live that long? NO way. How would they verify his claim? Carbon dating, would that work? |

An Indonesian man who claims to be the oldest person ever to have lived has celebrated his 146th birthday. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/wo...-a7505401.html
Mbah Gotho, from a small village in the Central Java province, has documentation that states he was born on 31 December 1870, and the Indonesian records office has said confirmed this was accurate |

If there was a shred of truth to his story wouldn't he have said something over 20 years ago when he would have "broken" the record?

This stuff is possible. The official record of 122, think about that, all the billions of people who've lived barely none of them get anywhere near 122.
Extremely rare occurrences are possible. |

It's rather convenient that all these extremely old people live in countries where records won't exactly be trustworthy.
If somebody gave me documents today from Nigeria or Ethiopia I'd treat them as genuine as Monopoly money. |

No it is not possible. There are very good scientific reasons why people do not live much past 110.
Even the 122 is doubted by some. |

It's mainly down to medical advances that dictate how long people live now, and in the future. It is the main reason why people generally live much longer now, than they ever did.
Only 16 people have ever seen a 116th birthday Only 6 have seen a 117th birthday. |

I believe it, I'm 149 myself so it could be true. Really and truly if a remote rural area doesn't keep records people might guess their age but even so it's still an outrageous claim. It's absolute cobblers. Only someone very gullible would believe it. Getting to 100 is quite an achievement, no one reaches 145. Apart from me so gifts and cheques for my next incredible birthday can be arranged via PM....

If you look at the longest lived say 50 people, it is not dominated, by recent entries.
Only 16 people have ever seen a 116th birthday Only 6 have seen a 117th birthday. A combination of certain people with fantastic genes in the first place and medical advances. Will carry on dictating how long people live. |

Well, medical advances are the key to living longer and longer. According to the medical field. Many articles will tell you this.

Er, the two verified oldest ever people were French and American and the current official worlds oldest person is Italian! Quote:

This is nothing to do with medicine. There is just an age at which the body cannot repair itself any longer. If your argument was true then the longest living person would be increasing every year. It isn't so your argument is invalid.

Yes that's true but I don't believe this person is 146. I think in some parts of the world record keeping is very hit and miss. However gullible tourists will turn up to see the amazing 146 year old man and some may give his family money.

For years Shigechiyo Izumi was cited as the oldest living person. If you look in Guiness Books of Records for about 30 years he is cited as verified.
However someone who was interested in this alerted me to the fact that she thought it was not true. She also raised doubts about Madam Calment. Now verification for Izumi has been withdrawn and Madam Calment looks lonely out by herself at 122. So it has been nearly 22 years since we saw someone celebrate a 120th birthday? So what is all this medicine doing to increase absolutely longevity? |

If you're all for the Science, you obviously haven't read up enough. Plenty of scientists are now saying 200 is definitely possible.
Also I have a particular interest in longevity since my father was one of those small group of people who had the chance of seeing three centuries. Although he lived to be a ripe old age he still missed it by a very considerable margin. Lots of scientists are saying that this is the first generation of people who will die at an earlier age than their parents. |

So recent advances wont start to really show, until further in the future. And plenty more advances are around the corner! Like I said you may be need to read more articles. |

Well being a scientist myself allows me to study these things for myself.

Many Scientists say there are young people around now who will reach 130 +, and 200 is mentioned quite frequently to. |
