Shmups
Shoot 'em ups, we called them back in my day, which has become shortened to shmup, or "STG" if you're even trendier.
A niche genre which has survived on the strength of a small, diehard fanbase. I urge everyone to revisit the genre if you've been out of the loop for a long time. My favourite of all time is Guwange, which you can get on xbox live on the 360, or mame, and hopefully steam one day. There's been a bit of a shmup renaissance of late on the pc with even the bullet hell daddies cave starting to port their games. Here's a handful of games on steam that I rate. Mushihimesama - http://store.steampowered.com/app/37...1_5_1100__1100 Deathsmiles - http://store.steampowered.com/app/31...1_5_1100__1100 Crimzon Clover - http://store.steampowered.com/app/28...1_5_1100__1100 Eschatos - http://store.steampowered.com/app/37...1_5_1100__1100 The Hurricane of the Varstray - http://store.steampowered.com/app/41...1_5_1100__1100 Space Moth DX - http://store.steampowered.com/app/42...1_5_1100__1100 Degica are currently having a sale at the humblebundle store if you want to pick up some of these cut price - https://www.humblebundle.com/store/promo/degicaweek/ e.g. Crimzon Clover steam key £1.60 - https://www.humblebundle.com/store/c...world-ignition Mushihemesama steam key £7.50 - https://www.humblebundle.com/store/mushihimesama and if you're just wanting to dip your toe in, this is criminially underpriced Star Saviors - http://store.steampowered.com/app/31...1_5_1100__1100 Deathsmiles is the perfect place to start, also available on the 360, it's very forgiving, especially on the lower difficulty settings. As for controllers, keyboard or a pad is fine but ideally, if you want to go full-shmup, you want a decent arcade stick. This is my current weapon of choice - http://arcadeshock.com/products/qanb...arts-version-2 Go with all seimitsu parts and you can't go wrong. The LS-58 is amazing, the LS-32 being my second favourite stick. So any other shmup geeks here? What are your favourite games? Thought I'd start this thread and we can keep all shmup related doings cordoned off in here, and if the thread sinks without a trace then at least I'll know that nobody's interested in my boring alien-blasting witterings ![]() Very excited for the incoming dodonPachi daifukkatsu pc port - https://twitter.com/DegiGames/status...129?lang=en-gb and trouble witches neo - http://store.steampowered.com/app/460630 |

My latest purchase on the PS4 is Caladrius Blaze also have Assault Suit Leynos and I'm patiently waiting for Touhou Genso Rondo: Bullet Ballet also for PS4. I'm not a PC gamer mainly Playstation and unfortunately most console release's seem to go to Xbox despite the fact that Xbox never sold well in Japan.
I do have a Japanese 360 though I haven't played it for a couple of years and I do have some games for it such as Guwange, Muchi Muchi Pork!, Pink Sweets, Deathsmiles, Do Don Pachi Resurrection. Damn now I need to get it out again also have Karous, Chaos Field and Radilgy for my Japanese Wii. Would love to try Radiant Silvergun but it's to pricey on the Saturn. I think one of my favourites is Ikaruga which I have on the Gamecube. The arcades in the 80's have a lot to answer for thanks to the likes of R-Type, Dragon Spirit and 1942. |

I've always loved this genre of game even though I am not actually particularly great at them. Quote:

I used to love playing Xenon 2 on the Amiga and PC back in the day and I have Under Defeat HD on the PS3 which I really should put some quality time into that. I also have R-Type 1&2 and Radian Legacy on my smartphone.
Like Stefmeister above, I'm not that good at them either but that won't stop me enjoying them on occasion. |

![]() Yeah, sorry if my post was a bit pc-centric. My consoles are hooked up to the telly and folk are always watching the telly. The only time I get to use them nowadays is when my nephews here and he doesn't care for shmups. Muchi muchi pork is fab, I love that game so much even if yagawa's rank systems make me tear my hair out. I just can't not play for score, got to collect all the shiny shiny. Never did 1cc that game, hope it comes to pc eventually because I think I'm very very close. The stage 1 music always cheers me right up - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTb0FEaqsv4 Is "caladrius blaze" any good then? I've had my eye on that, it's been on steamdb for a long time so it is coming to pc but god knows when - https://steamdb.info/sub/73041/ |

Yes Caladrius Blaze is good it's from the same team that did Raiden's sequels it is available on PS3 and 360. I hope more shooters come to the PS4 though I only really buy physical release's not a fan of downloads.

Glad to hear Caladrius Blaze is worth getting as I have been looking at that on the PS4.
I love the genre and until recently had a few Sega Astro City arcade cabinets set up with very high end mame rigs just to play them, the Cave games are the undisputed best of the genre for me, could never really get into the likes of Radiant Silvergun though... |

Ooh, lots of great games on sale there. Not strictly a shmup, more of a twin stick shooter/roguelite, but "enter the gungeon" is brilliant, make sure you get that while you're shopping
- http://store.steampowered.com/app/311690/edit: They just released a demo for eschatos if you want to try before you buy that - http://store.steampowered.com/app/378770/ If you're new to steam, the "download demo" is to the right of the "add to cart" button. The game has a very forgiving shield mechanic so it's great for people easing themselves back into the genre and it has some amazing music. Just listen to that! - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwM7zaBgTCA |

Xenon 2 was awesome
![]() . I'm tempted to buy a second hand Mega Drive (sadly, my original one died a couple of years back) so I can play MUSHA again. Might need to get a CRT television as well though. Can't imagine 16 bit looking that great on a modern tv. |

Blue Revolver is out and it's effing amazing, or as someone more eloquent than me on the shmups forum put it "beautiful, joyous and triumphant"
http://store.steampowered.com/app/439490/ Normal/novice is a fun, semi laid back 1cc, however playing for score in hyper mode with the Yagawa style evil rank mechanic will hand you your backside with extra garnish. After that, there's "parallel" mode which locks the difficulty at the highest rank for the truly masochistic. It's easily the best indie shmup I've played in a long time and comes highly recommended. Don't forget, Dodonpachi daifukkatsu unlocks in 20 hours - http://store.steampowered.com/app/464450/ Battle Garegga and Dangun Feveron coming to PS4 later this year courtesy of m2 (this means the ports will be nigh on flawless) - http://m2stg.com/

Anyone looking for a decent ps4/pc/ps3 stick, these are (surprisingly) really, really good (£55) - http://www.graingergames.co.uk/acces...4-arcade-stick
The perfect weight and size for sitting on your lap. I assumed that it'd be cheap and cheerful and that I'd have to mod it with decent parts as soon as I got it but it's brilliant! I'm just going to keep it how it is. The buttons feel a little clammy to the touch but that's only a minor gripe. The stick feels amazing, perfect for shmups, I think I like it even better than the ls-58. You can't go wrong for 55 quid. |

They're not really my thing anymore but I loved them back in the day. Two of my favourites were Axelay (SNES) and Gunhed ( PC Engine).

Degica weekend sale - http://store.steampowered.com/sale/degica/
All of these have good discounts and come highly recommended. Mushihimesama (£5.09) - http://store.steampowered.com/app/377860/ (you can also buy this with the 1.5 dlc and ost for £6.45 - http://store.steampowered.com/sub/83631/ ) Eschatos and Judgement Silversword (£7.49) - http://store.steampowered.com/sub/79117/ Crimzon Clover (£1.40) - http://store.steampowered.com/app/285440/ Deathsmiles (£7.49) - http://store.steampowered.com/app/314180/ May as well throw the excellent blue revolver into your basket while you're at it since you've saved so much money - http://store.steampowered.com/app/439490/

Decided to pick up Mushihimesama, Crimzon Clover and Deathsmiles. If there's one thing I've learnt it's that I totally suck at these games but they're fun for a quick blast. 15+ continues later and I finish the novice mode lol.
Crimzon Clover is by far my favourite - the other two seem to slow down a lot during gameplay, not sure if that's by design on compatibility with my laptop. I may pick up Eschatos too, and Blue Revolver at some point in the future if/when it's on special. |

Yeah, the slowdown is intentional and affectionately known as "cave time". It's there to give you more of a chance when things get hectic.
The top scoring players complain when slowdown isn't accurately emulated in ports as scoring can't be fairly compared between the two versions. For example, here's a comparison between the pc and the 360 versions of the ice palace stage in deathsmiles mega black label - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2-X7PONBY0 You can see that the slowdown is so inaccurate in the pc version that yer man finishes the stage in under 6 minutes whereas the more accurate 360 version takes him almost 9 minutes to complete. This makes the pc version of mega black label, in it's current form, "super hardcore bigboy mode" Deathsmiles is a perfect shmup for learning the ropes and getting better, play every stage on the lowest difficulty and you'll get your first 1cc in no time! |

Thanks for the confirmation on "cave time", good to know that it's intentional. Looking at that YouTube video, that's quite some difference between the X360 and Steam versions, no wonder I suck so much
If I ever 1cc I'll let you know, might be a while though, don't hold your breath haha. So far I think I've managed to get to the 2nd boss in Crimson Clover without dying, I was happy with that. |
