I think it's probably more produced and steered than most casual viewers think but less than the conspiracy theorists think
I think the producers have a good idea of storylines soon after the casting stage and give helpful 'nudges' along the way which some HMs are aware of and others aren't. I don't think it's actually scripted though, not yet.
It's probably on the cards though eventually.

Letting it be known that he'll defend his trophy. He'll probably be in next year's BB All Stars. Unfortunately Bear will probably be there too.

I think you are right. It is somewhere in the middle of the two extremes (scripted vs reality). I would not be surprised if the Bear vs Renee bit was fake yet the ADHD-like behavior of Bear was likely real as was it's effects on some of the HMs. However I do think the HMs may have embellished their reactions a bit. Yes, it is a "pressure cooker" but I still think some of it was embellished. I also question if all of them were in on it--I don't think so. I don't think Sam or Ricky were in on anything.
IDK in truth. I think some of them had an "outline" of parts they previously talked about playing. Maybe they improvised a bit....not sure. I don't think it is scripted but I think it is more staged than just the bit we saw on LF. I also think some of the HM stage themselves or work together (even if working against each other). Most of them know there have to be "sides" (remember the 4 in and 4 out from that civilian series when they tried not to have sides).

He's only greeting her. They're not best friends but they don't hate each other either. I think it's a bit paranoid to think everything is fake or they are being fed lines. Maybe the people that think that haven't watched Big Brother very long. Yeah, it's changed since Big Brother 1 and they have their own agendas and stories they want to tell, but that doesn't mean everything is fake. Not that I needed them to convince me but I also believe the words of people who have actually been in there who have been defending the show on twitter since the controversy started. Chris (from Helen's series) said they did the getting into bed thing too at the request of Big Brother but defended it saying it's the only thing they did and said the programme wasn't fake. Joel defended it aswell and said Big Brother is the most real reality show on tv (I agree with him). I also remember reading a question and answer thread for an ex-housemate on here once and one of the questions was if he had ever been told what to say while in the diary room. His answer was 'Never'.
Continuity errors like Ricky's cigarette doesn't mean it's fake either. They just show the parts of the conversation they find interesting enough to show. They're not going to keep in the boring bits. If that means Ricky saying something to Bear while holding a half smoked cigarette and then cutting to Bear and then back to Ricky who is now holding a full size cigarette then that's what's gonna happen. This is a bit dodgy though because it's like they're restructuring a conversation. They're making it seem like Ricky replied to Bear with something he said 5 minutes ago. In that scenario it didn't really make a difference but that's something they could use to twist things.

I'm inclined to agree. I've seen it as a 'soap' for a few years. The only ones being manipulated is the viewing public. Particularly those daft sods who spend their hard-earned money on voting.

I think "produced" reality is the best description. I think a lot of people (including some on these forums) seem to think the term "scripted" means everyone has been given words to say for the whole time they are there (which is not the case).

Does he mean all BBs, or just Celebrity versions? Have any of the recent HMs mentioned whether it was scripted or not? I suppose they would not be allowed to say if it was, I am assuming they are legally gagged. But, who knows!

I think they will manipulate certain tasks for certain winners etc. But I think the interactions between the HMs are real. Well as real as they are being. But the production team definitely splice it all up into something completely different than what actually happened.
I'm sure most of us have seen the 'Screenwipe' episode where Charlie shows how misleading reality editing can be made.

This is it, and some shows have very light producing of situations and some very heavy. What annoys me is when shows push for heavy and the cast/housmates cannot handle it well or do not look very convincing. Americans seem to handle it better on American reality show compared to Brits on UK versions.

I think that's a bit overboard. I haven't seen lots of people on here saying anything like that.
Lots of people on here, myself included, don't like that it's been switched to "structured reality"( which is a seriously wanky term in my opinion ). But I've not read anybody saying it's totally scripted or that the HMs had to learn their lines except when they're being sarcastic. I think maybe you're taking a lot of posts at face value.
